Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal remains red-hot as the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers head toward the postseason. O'Neal had 31 points and 17 rebounds and Kobe Bryant scored 10 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Lakers continued their mastery of the Western Conference-leading Dallas Mavericks with a 100-89 victory. The All-Star center is averaging 27.6 points per game on 57 percent shooting. But he has been even more impressive recently, averaging 34.5 points on 62 percent shooting over the last 10 contests. "We know that if we play like that, we can compete with anybody," O'Neal said. "We tried to limit their great shooters to one shot and down on the other end, we took the high-percentage shots and take care of the ball as much as possible." The Lakers were trailing by six points in the third quarter when O'Neal scored six during a decisive 15-4 run. Reserve forward Mark Madsen capped the burst by making 1-of-2 free throws with 24.1 seconds remaining, giving Los Angeles a 74-65 advantage. "We were good in the second half, much better defensively," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We were more active. Offensively, we got some boosts from our bench when Shaquille came out at the beginning of the fourth to extend the lead and push it to a position where we could hold them off." O'Neal registered his 40th double-double of the season as the Lakers went on to their 43rd win in 50 trips to Dallas. Los Angeles still trails Utah by one game for sixth place in the Western Conference but moved within 2 1/2 games of fourth-place Portland. "I think in order to get No. 4 (in the playoffs), we are going to have to play like this," O'Neal said. "I know that in the playoffs, my team is going to step up." Steve Nash scored 26 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 25 and a season-high 22 rebounds, but the Mavericks' lead over idle Sacramento was reduced to 2 1/2 games in the battle for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. "I think they have their playoff posture in mind now," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said of the Lakers. "They are gearing up for the playoffs and will once again be dominant. They know how to play and win. They've been there before. They've played through adversity and do a lot of things championship teams do." Derek Fisher chipped in 18 points and a season-high eight boards for the Lakers. The point guard nailed a 3-pointer with a second left to forge a 49-49 halftime tie. The NBA's second-leading scorer, Bryant shot just 3-of-14 in the first three quarters. But the All-Star guard was 4-of-5 in the opening 3 1/2 minutes of the final period, increasing the Lakers' lead to 82-70. "In the fourth quarter, I sensed it was time to start turning things up a little bit," Bryant said. "We approached it as a big game. We approached this as come in here and do everything possible to win this ballgame. It was very important to us that we hustled." "We talked about it last week, how necessary it is for him to score when Shaquille goes out of the ballgame," Jackson added. "He becomes the first option on our ballclub. He carried that at that point. He did a good job." The Mavericks put together a 9-0 run midway through the fourth, sparked by a follow shot by Raef LaFrentz with 7:36 to play. "The championship goes through them," LaFrentz said. "It's not going to be easy going up against them." Nash followed with a driving layup, then hit from the arc with just over six minutes left to pull the Mavericks within 84-77. Former Laker Nick Van Exel converted a reverse layup with 5:49 to go, capping the run and reducing Dallas' deficit to five. But O'Neal scored points points during an 11-4 run that gave Los Angeles a 95-83 lead with 82 seconds remaining. Nelson was ejected with 4:09 left, receiving a double-technical for arguing that O'Neal fouled Nowitzki on an attempted layup.
