Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- It's not often the Los Angeles Clippers are the ones that make the plays down the stretch. Elton Brand took advantage of one of the NBA's weaker frontcourts to score 29 points as the Clippers pushed the New York Knicks to the brink of elimination from the postseason race with a 109-98 victory. Headed to the NBA Lottery for the sixth straight season, the Clippers enjoyed one of their better efforts, closing the contest on a 17-7 run over the final 4:21 to all but ensure the Knicks would join them in the lottery for the second straight year. "If you play hard, smart, and with confidence, you are always going to be in the game," Clippers coach Dennis Johnson said. "That's what we did tonight and that's why we won the game." New York (34-43) trails the Milwaukee Bucks by 3 1/2 games for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot. The Knicks will be eliminated from playoff contention with one loss in their last five games or if the Bucks (38-40) win one of their last four games. "Every time we make some ground up we just can't finish it," Houston said. "It's frustrating. It's just one of those things that you don't want to dwell on. We just didn't get our bodies to follow what our minds were thinking." Brand had his way the entire night, making 13-of-20 shots in 41 minutes in his best effort since returning from the injured list earlier this week. "It's actually kind of weird to me. I didn't think I'd play this many minutes because I went five weeks without practicing at all," said Brand, who was sidelined with a stress fracture in his lower left leg. "So to come back the first few games, I didn't really want to get touched or draw contact but I'm definitely glad coach (Dennis Johnson) has given me the chance to play and I'm going to go out there and try to produce." Andre Miller chipped in 12 points for Los Angeles, which won for just the second time in its last eight games. Fighting for their playoff lives, the Knicks trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half but closed to 92-91 with 5:41 remaining on a 3-pointer by Charlie Ward. The Knicks were still within 99-96 with 2:52 to go following a layup by Clarence Weatherspoon. After Weatherspoon's basket, the Knicks went cold and missed eight of their last 10 shots. It also was a forgettable return to the Staples Center for Houston, who scored just eight points on 3-of-16 shooting. In a victory over the Lakers here on February 16, Houston made 18-of-29 shots and scored a career-high 53 points. "I didn't really get the spots I wanted to get," Houston said. "They (Clippers) did a good job on defense. I couldn't do it tonight." Corey Maggette made two foul foul shots with 2:29 to go, Sean Rooks converted a layup and Miller drilled a jumper with 41 seconds left, giving the Clippers a commanding 105-96 cushion. Maggette finished with 12 points and Lamar Odom 10 as the Clippers shot 56 percent (43-of-77) and made 18-of-20 free throws. New York shot 38.5 percent (35-of-91). "We have to play better defense," Knicks forward Latrell Sprewell said. "They (the Clippers) shot the ball better than we did. We were doubling their guards and they did a good job passing the ball and getting the shot down. We are just not playing to our capability." "We have to play the ball better," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "They (Clippers) had open shots throughout the game." A reverse dunk by Brand gave the Clippers their largest lead at 75-64 with 5:37 left in the third quarter. But Sprewell scored seven points in a 16-8 surge to end the quarter, helping the Knicks close to 83-80.
