Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- All it took for the Cleveland Cavaliers to beat a playoff-bound team was for the New Orleans Hornets to play without three starters. The Cavaliers snapped a six-game losing streak by defeating the injury-ravaged Hornets, 79-76. Baron Davis, David Wesley and P.J. Brown all sat out for New Orleans. That left a lot work for Jamal Mashburn, who scored 23 points but missed a 30-foot shot as time expired. "I got a good look," Mashburn said. "It was a look that we wanted, but we should have never been in that position. You don't deserve the game sometimes when you hoist up things and get lucky plays and things like that." New Orleans (42-35) had its lead over the Boston Celtics for the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference trimmed to one-half game. Ricky Davis was Cleveland's top scorer with 17 points, but he shot an atrocious 7-of-23 from the floor. He had seven rebounds and seven assists, while rookie Carlos Boozer had 13 points and 15 rebounds. "Granted, they were without three of their big players, but at the same time, they had enough to win," Boozer said. "We came out and got some stops, got our offense clicking and we got the win." Neither team's offense was performing with great efficiency. The Cavaliers won despite shooting 37 percent (34-of-91) from the field, in part because the Hornets shot just 34 percent (28-of-82). Both teams scored only two points in the final 1:42 of the contest. icky Davis missed 2-of-4 free throws during the stretch, but New Orleans could not take advantage. "I thought we might have taken them for granted a little bit," said Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds. "But we definitely didn't come out with the energy that we should have in the first half, and that cost us the game." The Hornets took their last lead, 72-70, with 5:18 left when Mashburn hit a 3-pointer from the left side. But the Cavaliers reeled off the next seven points, capped by Milt Palacio's jumper with 2:06 remaining.
