Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady should've stayed on the sidelines. With McGrady playing hurt, the Orlando Magic were overwhelmed, 108-90, by the Dallas Mavericks, who got 29 points from Dirk Nowitzki. The NBA's leading scorer at 32.4 points per game, McGrady did not start due to a strained muscle in his ribs. By the time the superstar entered the game with 3:55 left in the first quarter, the Magic found themselves trailing, 25-9. McGrady could not do anything to rally his team as he clearly was not himself. He finished with 12 points and made just 3-of-14 shots from the field in 25 minutes. "Tracy said he wanted to play and I told Teddy (trainer Ted Arzonico) I'd let him play as long as I saw him moving freely, but if I saw anything he was coming out," Magic coach Doc Rivers. "Because this is not anything that we can afford as basketball team to be one of those injuries that keeps on lingering. We just aren't good enough without him." "Well, we found out before the game that he wasn't going to play and then to see him come on was a little surprising," Mavs point guard Steve Nash said. McGrady left the arena without talking to the media in order to have an X-ray performed. Nowitzki outscored McGrady in the first quarter alone, when he netted 15 points, helping the Mavs build a 33-20 lead. He had 22 points by the break as the lead grew to 63-42. Nash added 28 points and 11 assists (57-19) for the Mavericks, who matched last season's franchise record for wins while moving one game in front of second-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division. Each team has six games remaining, including a meeting in San Antonio on the final day of the regular season. Rookie Gordan Giricek scored 18 points and Jacque Vaughn 16 for Orlando, which fell 2 1/2 games behind Boston for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Coming off Thursday's humbling loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Mavericks led virtually the entire way and by as many as 28 in this one. They took the lead for good at 5-4 on Nowitzki's jumper with 10:33 left in the first quarter. A driving layup by Nowitzki provided a 25-9 lead with 4:10 left in the quarter. McGrady entered the contest 15 seconds later, but could not provide the Magic a spark. "Give them credit. They played really well and came out and hammered us early," Rivers said. "With T-Mac (McGrady) not going it would be very difficult for us tonight. We got in a hole and we could never get out." "It was some first quarter, wasn't it?" Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "It's never easy to get a big league and it is sometimes harder to maintain it. We were still able to do it, but it was pretty ugly in the fourth quarter." After Giricek's jumper pulled the Magic within 39-28 with 7:22 left in the first half, the Mavs answered with a 17-3 surge to take control of the game for good. Nash started the burst with consecutive 3-pointers. Nowitzki also had six points in the spurt that he capped with two foul shots, pushing the advantage to 56-31 with 2:51 left before the break. Nash led a long-range assault as he made a career-high six 3-pointers. As team, the Mavs connected on 11-of-23 attempts from the arc. Nash finished 10-of-15 from the field and committed six of his club's 16 turnovers. "I was open a lot andy my teammates were finding me, and I just kept shooting it," Nash said. "When we move the ball, we are difficult to guard. I thought we did a good job moving the ball and I was the beneficiary of it." The Magic also had a rough time taking care of the ball. They committed 21 turnovers that the Mavs converted into 18 points. Dallas controlled things the entire second half, taking its biggest lead at 78-50 with 7:26 to play in the third quarter. Raja Bell and Raef LaFrentz each added 11 points for Dallas, which shot 49 percent (42-of-85). Orlando shot 44 percent (33-of-75) and held a 45-39 edge on the boards.
