Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ron Artest and Reggie Miller sparked an enormous run in the third quarter as the Indiana Pacers cruised past the Miami Heat, 90-69, for their third straight win. Suddenly surging Indiana (46-31) moved one-half game ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers into third place in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers closed within two games of the conference-leading New Jersey Nets and 1 1/2 games of the Central Division-leading Detroit Pistons. "We can only worry about ourselves," Miller said. "We put ourselves in this position. As long as we're playing well going into the playoffs, it doesn't matter what seed we are. We feel we can go to anyone's place and get a win. We're just concentrating on playing good basketball." Artest and Miller scored seven points apiece during a 27-4 run over the last nine minutes of the third quarter as the Pacers took a 73-48 lead. Indiana led by as many as 31 points down the stretch. "I thought (Artest's) energy in the third quarter was special for us," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "Not only did he defend, he got inside for some baskets. ... He looks really sharp now, like he did when he came out of training camp." The Pacers have won four of their last five games. The Heat, meanwhile, have lost four in a row and seven straight road contests. Jonathan Bender scored nine of his 15 points in the second quarter to lead the Pacers, who held a 44-37 halftime lead. Artest added 13 points and Miller 11. Reserve Mike James scored 19 points for the Heat, whose starters combined for just 32 points. Brian Grant had 15 points and 10 rebounds. "Usually we have one perimeter guy a night," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "Tonight it was James. I usually play six and only get one. It would be nice if I could get three or four." James shot 7-of-11 from the field, while the rest of the Heat shot a hideous 27 percent (20-of-73). Former Heat Tim Hardaway scored five points off the bench, including a 3-pointer in front of the Miami bench in the second quarter. "I know Tim had Isiah draw up that play so he could shoot it right in front of me," Riley said. "(New Orleans Hornets forward Jamal) Mashburn does the same thing." Riley did not see his own team shoot well from 3-point range, making just 4-of-18 from the arc. "It was pretty pathetic out there," Riley said. "It doesn't take much for us to go. We don't have much resolve." The Pacers had their best defensive effort of the season. "Defense is the toughest part of the game, and when you play good defense, your offense will come," Artest said. "I play hard and I know I have hurt the team by being out (with suspensions). This is something that I have to work hard on and do myself." Artest committed only one foul in 24 minutes.
