Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Jason Williams scored 23 points, including the go-head jumper with 1:02 remaining, as the shorthanded Memphis Grizzlies snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 111-108 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Williams answered a tying 10-0 run by the Clippers with a 17-footer behind a screen, giving Memphis a 106-104 lead. That gave the Grizzlies the lead for good, although there were some anxious moments. After Mike Batiste's two free throws made it 108-104 with 27 seconds left, Elton Brand was fouled. He made the first free throw and missed the second, but teammate Andre Miller rebounded and flipped it in, making it a one-point game. Williams was fouled with 17 seconds to play and split the pair, giving the Grizzlies a 109-107 lead. Eric Piatkowski was fouled with 12 seconds left, giving the Clippers a chance to tie. But he missed the second free throw. Pau Gasol rebounded and was fouled. He sank both free throws to make it a three-point game. With no timeouts, the Clippers hurried upcourt, and Corey Maggette fired an airball on a 3-pointer. The ball went out of bounds off Memphis with two seconds to go, but Piatkowski's 3-pointer wedged between the rim and backboard as the buzzer sounded. "At the end of the game, when we needed a three, I got my hands on the ball," Piatkowski said. "I'm supposed to be the designated 3-point shooter on the team. All you can ask for is to get a good look at it. I had a good look at it but left it short." Gasol had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Batiste - who was cut by the Clippers in training camp - added 15 and 11 for the Grizzlies, whose slide was their longest under coach Hubie Brown. Memphis lost its first 13 games, but the first eight were under Sidney Lowe. "Since the All-Star break we have been involved in so many close games until we have these rash of injuries where we lost our guys," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. The Grizzlies were without starters Lorenzen Wright and Mike Miller, both of whom were placed on the injured list and will miss the rest of the season. "We have a bad habit of not putting away teams that we think we should put away," Clippers forward Lamar Odom said. "On a night like this, we thought we could beat this team without Mike Miller or Lorenzen Wright." Maggette scored 22 points and Brand added 21 and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, who had won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams. "I think everybody in that room had something to play for," said Clippers interim coach Dennis Johnson, who fell to 5-14 since replacing Alvin Gentry. "If they don't, they better come see me because I'll pull them just as quick as they enter the game." The Clippers began a five-game road trip with a loss, which usually is a sign of things to come. "We know on these long trips we usually go on how we start," Odom said. "How we play the first quarter of a game determines how we play the game. When we start a road trip with a win or loss usually determines how we end the road trip." The Clippers held an 88-84 lead after Piatkowski's 3-pointer early in the final period before the Grizzlies put together a 14-2 run as six different players scored. A three-point play by Gasol gave Memphis a 104-94 lead with 4:13 remaining, but LA got 3-pointers from Maggette and Piatkowski in its 10-0 burst that tied the game. "That's how we lost those games by one or two points (during the streak)," Batiste said. "We weren't playing bad, it was just the little things that we needed to correct. We did that tonight." Shane Battier scored 17 points for Memphis, which shot 43 percent (38-of-89) but held a 46-37 edge on the boards. Odom scored 20 points, Miller added 17 and Piatkowski 12 for Los Angeles, which shot 51 percent (40-of-79). Williams and Battier scored 13 points each in the first half as the Grizzlies grabbed a 60-59 edge. Miller's eight points in the third quarter gave the Clippers an 85-83 lead entering the final period.
