Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons had to work overtime against the NBA's worst road team, but they are back in control of their own destiny. Chauncey Billups scored five of his 29 points in the extra period as the Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak with a 111-102 victory over the Chicago Bulls. "Overtime, it's a possession game," Billups said. "It's a five-minute game. Every possession has to be very important. You've got to work every possession, you've got to maximize it." The win, coupled with Atlanta's surprising 97-92 victory over New Jersey, pulled Detroit (48-30) back into a tie with New Jersey for the best record in the Eastern Conference with four games remaining. The Pistons own the tiebreaker. However, Detroit coach Rick Carlisle is not allowing himself to get caught in the race for home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs. "A lot of strange things happen in this league," Carlisle said. "You look every night and there's wacky things happening, who's beating who. I don't get caught up in this too much. After 19 years, I've seen a lot of this. I've learned that it's more important to concentrate on your own team." But the Pistons continue to struggle without All-Star center Ben Wallace, who is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with a sprained MCL. The Pistons could not put away the Bulls, squandering a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter. "We've just got to keep playing and keep trying to win as many game as possible to keep yourself in the hunt for that top spot," Detroit center Clifford Robinson said. "That's all we can do right now." Chicago had a chance to win in regulation, but Jalen Rose missed a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer. Instead, the Bulls fell to 3-37 on the road and 1-8 in overtime. "We have to learn how to get it done on the road," said Bulls guard Jamal Crawford, who scored 26 points. "We played too many close games not to be able to finish them off. If we had won 10 or 15 games on the road, we could be in the playoffs." Robinson scored 24 points for the Pistons, while rookie Mehmet Okur contributed 19. Richard Hamilton added 17 and tied a career high with nine assists. "We needed it bad, especially a home game," said Hamilton, whose team had dropped three in a row at the Palace at Auburn Hills. "We haven't been taking care of home lately and when you don't take care of home, bad things happen." Detroit never trailed in overtime, outscoring the Bulls, 16-7. Billups' spin move snapped a tie with 4:33 to go before his two foul shots made it 103-97 with 2:58 remaining. Detroit kept two perfect marks intact. It is 7-0 in overtime and 17-0 when scoring at least 100 points. "We had some significant leads that we probably should have hung on to a little bit better, but to hang on and go to a seventh overtime and win in overtime again is admirable, to say the least," Carlisle said. "We're just very focused when it comes to overtime," Billups added. "Rick calls great plays and we seem to get it done." Chicago's only points in the first four minutes of overtime were a pair of free throws by Crawford. The Bulls were 0-for-4 from the field and committed four turovers - all steals by the Pistons - on their first nine possessions of overtime. "Our road record is a testament to how tough it is for young teams to learn how to win in this league," Rose said. "You just wish you could learn all of it at once, but it is a long, painful process." Detroit shot 69 percent (11-of-16) in the first quarter, opening a 31-25 lead before stretching its advantage to 72-59 with 3:30 left in the third quarter. Rose contributed 24 points for the Bulls, who suffered their 10th straight road loss. The Pistons took a 79-67 lead into the final period but scored only four points over the next six minutes. Chicago went up, 92-90, on Crawford's leaner with 2:45 left, the first of three lead changes in the final three minutes. The Pistons took a 95-94 lead on Billups' two free throws with 1:24 to go. Ten seconds later, Rose hit 1-of-2 from the line to tie it for the final time. The Pistons swept the season series for the second time in three seasons and have won 18 of their last 20 games against the Bulls.
