Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Shorthanded again, the New Orleans Hornets were not about to be embarrassed again by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Jamal Masburn helped make up for the absence of missing starters Baron Davis and P.J. Brown as the Hornets cruised to a 100-81 rout of the Cavaliers, who lost their 19th straight road game. On Saturday, the Hornets also were without Davis, Brown and guard David Wesley as they endured a 79-76 loss in Cleveland against the NBA's worst team. Wesley returned to the lineup after missing nine games with a bruised left foot and contributed 17 points. But it was Mashburn who did the most damage. He scored 28 points, making 12-of-17 shots from the floor and toying with Cavs' zone defense. "We were focused tonight," Mashburn said. "The Cavs are aggressive and do not quit. Tonight we wanted to rebound better than we did Saturday. We have to continue to work on things that we need to work on to get ready for the playoffs." Jamaal Magloire added 14 points and 10 rebounds and George Lynch 12 and 14 for New Orleans (43-35), which remained one game ahead of sixth-place Boston in the Eastern Conference. "Tonight was a good showing of knowing what the game plan was," Lynch said. "We stuck to it and everybody shared in the scoring." Zyrdrunas Ilgauskas netted 15 points and rookie Carlos Boozer 10 for the Cavs, who fell to 3-36 on the road. They have not won away from Gund Arena since January 12 at Seattle. "This was probably one of our worst games in a while," Cavs interim coach Keith Smart said. "I thought we'd be a bit lethargic. We were playing back-to-back and I thought this one would be tough." Wesley opened the game with a basket and the Hornets never trailed. Mashburn converted a layup and 3-pointer before Wesley's basket pushed the advantage to 20-8 with 3:27 left in the first quarter. Wesley played 41 minutes in his return to the lineup and made just 6-of-18 shots from the field. He made up for his shooting by handing out eight assists and grabbing seven rebounds. "I didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but I felt like I played a pretty decent game," Wesley said. "I'm trying to push through the pain. I'm trying to ignore it, but I have to get through it by trying to protect it. I tried to be aggressive, but was tentative at times." The Hornets held an 11-point lead after the first quarter. Lynch and Mashburn hit jumpers to trigger a 12-2 spurt to start the second quarter, capped by a follow dunk by Jerome Moiso for a 40-19 advantage. "They had to get out of their zone in the third quarter because we picked it apart," Mashburn said. "Their zone bothered us a little bit in Cleveland. But we worked on some things in practice, and that made all the difference in the world." Mashburn had 14 points and Wesley 11 in the first half as the Hornets settled for a 57-42 cushion. Cleveland committed 11 of its 20 turnovers in the opening half. "This team was ready for us," Smart said. "Jamal had a good night and Wesley makes a big difference." The Hornets were in control throughout the second half, leading by at least 13 points the entire way and by as many as 30 with under a minute left in the third quarter.
