Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry and the Atlanta Hawks used a devastating run to send the Cleveland Cavaliers to their usual fate. Terry scored nine of his 16 points in a spurt where the Hawks scored 26 straight points in the first quarter as they cruised to a 109-89 rout of the hapless Cavaliers. Dion Glover led the way with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists as Atlanta won its fourth straight home game. The Hawks swept the season series from the Cavaliers for the first time since the 1997-98 season, winning all four meetings. Cleveland took an early 10-2 on rookie Carlos Boozer's basket 3 1/2 minutes into the game. Atlanta responded with its 26-0 tear, holding the Cavaliers scoreless until the closing seconds of the first quarter. "I don't think we've had one of those in a long time," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "It was good to have, and the run we put on in the first quarter was impressive." Terry's basket midway through the quarter tied the game at 10-10 and two foul shots by Theo Ratliff put the Hawks ahead for good. Terry hit Shareef Abdur-Rahim for a layup and added a jumper to cap the run for a 28-10 advantage with 32 seconds to go in the quarter. "I didn't even know what it was," Terry said. "We were just playing basketball and having a great time. It was just a streak where we were playing together, playing lose, and getting stops on the defensive end." Tierre Brown finally broke the drought for Cleveland with a basket with four seconds left. The Cavaliers have played some of the league's worst basketball this season and turned in one of the season's ugliest stretches. Cleveland missed 12 straight shots after Boozer's basket, turned the ball over six times and went 0-of-5 from the foul line during Atlanta's surge. Ricky Davis missed four shots and three free throws in the stretch. "It's real hard to defend a team when they're in a groove like that," Cleveland forward Darius Miles said. "That's just how our season's been going." The Cavaliers' 12 first-quarter points was a season-low for a Hawks' opponent. Brown scored a season-high 15 points for Cleveland, which lost its 20th straight road game. The Cavaliers fell to 3-37 on the road, tying Chicago for the worst mark in the league. Atlanta placed six players in double figures. Abdur-Rahim collected 17 points and 13 rebounds and Ratliff netted 17 points. Ira Newble and Jermaine Jackson each scored 10 points. "That was big," Glover said. "That's what took care of them, the 26 in a row." The Hawks played for the second straight game without injured forward Glenn Robinson, who missed the game with inflammation in his left Achilles tendon. Newble got the start and had a second straight effective outing after scoring a season-high 16 points in Wednesday's win over New Jersey. Terry added nine assists and four steals and Glover also came up with four steals for the Hawks, who forced 19 turnovers. Davis was the lone starter in double figures for Cleveland with 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting. Jumaine Jones, a Georgia native, netted 13 points off the bench. "They've got to go out and play the game from a defensive standpoint but they go out and try to do it from an offensive standpoint by jacking up shots and that's why we got ran out of here tonight," Cavs coach Keith Smart said. Cleveland needs to lose two of its three remaining games to clinch the worst record in the NBA.
