Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Chris Webber capped a big night by hitting the go-ahead layup with nine-tenths of a second remaining as the Sacramento Kings avoided an embarrassing loss with a 105-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets. With the game tied, Webber used a pick by point guard Mike Bibby to drive to the basket and hit the winning shot. The star forward fell just shy of a triple-double with collected 29 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. "It was a play where Mike and I like to play off each other, just see what opportunities we get," Webber said. "I had Vlade (Divac) cutting through the lane and should have passed the ball to him early. If I would have seen him first, I would have passed it to him, but I just tried to scoop it and see what shot I could get at the end." Juwan Howard - Webber's former collegiate teammate at Michigan - scored 24 points to lead the Nuggets. His jumper with 72 seconds remaining forged a 101-101 tie. Webber and Peja Stojakovic each made 1-of-2 from the line to give the Kings the lead. But rookie Nene Hilario had a tip-in with 22 seconds left to get the Nuggets back even. Shammond Williams, who scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Nuggets. "The thing that we didn't do tonight is get a win," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Other than that, I thought our basketball team played extremely well. I was very pleased with the team effort, both offensively and defensively. We did a lot of things well enough that if we played teams other than Sacramento, we would have had the win." Kings reserve Jim Jackson scored all 11 of his points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Sacramento never trailed after his 3-pointer with 10:37 left. "I was more aggressive in the second half," Jackson said. "They gave me room to work and we took advantage." Sacramento led by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter, but Denver earned four ties in the final three minutes of play. "It never feels good not winning, but we know that every night isn't going to be a cakewalk for everybody," Williams said. "Any given night, we can play at (Sacramento's) level. We just have to be consistent about it. ... People are playing to show that they belong." The Nuggets have lost five in a row and eight straight on the road.
