Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady got the Orlando Magic back into the game by himself, then trusted his teammates to win it. McGrady scored nine of his 37 points in a two-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and helped find teammates for three clutch baskets down the stretch as the Magic edged the slumping Boston Celtics, 89-86, in a matchup of playoff-bound teams. "Tracy is everything that they say he is," Boston forward Eric Williams said. "He knows how to get his players involved. They have guys that can shoot the ball that surround him." McGrady's flurry included two jumpers, a 3-pointer and a driving lefthanded dunk in 103 seconds. It erased an eight-point deficit and gave Orlando an 80-79 lead with 3:50 to play. Paul Pierce made a nifty layup and Tony Delk sank a 3-pointer to reclaim an 84-80 lead for the Celtics with 2:44 to go before McGrady turned into a playmaker, effectively beating double-teams with passes. McGrady found a wide-open Jacque Vaughn underneath for a layup. After Pierce drove for a dunk, McGrady passed to Andrew DeClercq for a dunk that cut the deficit to 86-84 with 1:09 remaining. Pierce committed a turnover, and McGrady drew a double-team and began a swing of the ball to the left corner to rookie Gordan Giricek, whose 3-pointer gave Orlando the lead with 33 seconds to play. "My last shot was nothing," Giricek said. "I was open. Everyone can make good shots then." "I thought it started last night," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought in the fourth quarter last night we had three possessions in a row where the ball touched everyone's hands and someone else scored. Tonight we had three or four in a row that touched everyone's hands - great shot, but we didn't make it. I thought the best part about that (was) T still had the confidence to do the same thing." After Pierce missed a runner and a tough tip attempt, the Celtics lost the ball out of bounds and had to foul Vaughn, whose two free throws made it 89-86 with 12 seconds left. Pierce and Antoine Walker missed 3-pointers on Boston's final possession. McGrady made just 12-of-30 shots, adding nine rebounds and four assists. During his fourth-quarter spurt, he broke Shaquille O'Neal's franchise record for points in a season (2,385). "Things are meshing together," McGrady said. "We'll see what happens." "He's going to score the basketball," Walker said. "If you look at it, he didn't win the game; he got DeClercq a layup and then they made the 3-pointer." Giricek scored 16 points and Pat Garrity added 10 for the Magic, who shot under 40 percent (31-of-78) and made 9-of-23 3-pointers. McGrady was 4-of-11 from the arc and Giricek 3-of-8. Orlando has won three in a row following a four-game slide. "It was a big win for us, especially coming off a game after clinching the playoffs," McGrady said. "You definitely don't want to set yourself back." Pierce had 25 points and nine rebounds and Walker added 21 and nine for the Celtics, who have lost 10 of their last 14 games and fell into a tie with Orlando for sixth place in the Eastern Conference. "Going into the playoffs, we want to win out the last two games and gain some momentum," Pierce said. "You'd hate to finish seventh and then look at a team that got you in sixth sometime in the playoffs," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "So it's important, absolutely." Garrity's 3-pointer with 6:12 left was Orlando's first basket of the final quarter and cut the deficit to 76-71. That ended Boston's 13-3 run to open the period featuring six points from Pierce and four from Williams. Walter McCarty drilled a 3-pointer to rebuild Bostons' lead to 79-71 before McGrady took charge. "Last year, we would normally finish out a game like this," Williams said. "It was one of those things where we need to understand what it takes to get back to the level of play that we had last year." A three-point play by DeClercq gave the Magic a 49-42 lead with 10:03 remaining in the third period before the Celtics rattled off 12 straight points. A 3-pointer from Garrity closed the quarter and gave Orlando a 65-63 lead. Irish rookie Pat Burke had nine points and eight boards for the Magic, who held a 44-40 edge on the glass. Williams scored 16 points and McCarty added 10 for the Celts, who shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74), including 8-of-28 from the arc.
