Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets are playing their best at the right time. Baron Davis scored 21 points and Jamal Mashburn recorded his second triple-double of the season as the Hornets extended their winning streak to five games with a 92-77 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. New Orleans (47-35) was locked into fifth place in the Eastern Conference when Philadelphia and Indiana won earlier Wednesday. But that did not slow the Hornets, who are the hottest team in the Eastern Conference entering the playoffs. "The mark of this team the past few years down the stretch, they have picked it up," said New Orleans coach Paul Silas, who became the winningest coach in franchise history with his 208th victory. "The mental part of this game is so important. To have the mental edge now is important. You can't say enough about this team." "You can't help but feel good about our situation and what we've done the last couple of games," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "You always hear about playoff teams peaking at the right time. It's almost like we've it hit right on the head. It was perfect timing, winning five in a row. We're playing good basketball and I like our confidence right now." Mashburn collected 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds and Robert Traylor scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter for New Orleans, which will face fourth-place Philadelphia in the first round. "It's hard to think about (Philadelphia) after we just played a whole season," said Mashburn, who has three career triple-doubles. "I'm trying to let things settle down a bit. We know what we have ahead of us." The Hornets were clinging to a 75-71 lead with 8:33 remaining before going on a 14-4 run. Traylor scored six points during the spurt, which gave New Orleans an 89-75 cushion with just 77 seconds to go. New Orleans scored 21 of the game's final 29 points despite not having any starters score in the fourth quarter. "We always thought we had a deep bench," Hornets forward George Lynch said. "We would like to go into the playoffs with every team thinking we don't have a deep bench." David Wesley and P.J. Brown scored 10 points apiece for New Orleans, which shot just 39 percent (35-of-90) from the floor but made 5-of-9 3-pointers and 17-of-21 free throws. The Hornets committed just nine turnovers and scored 31 points off 23 Atlanta miscues. "We controlled things and then a stretch of turnovers beat us," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "It was just like the last time we played them." Dion Glover had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Terry added 13 points and eight assists for the lottery-bound Hawks, who had won six of their previous seven games. "It's disappointing, but with no playoff implications involved there was nothing really riding on it but pride," Terry said. "We played as hard as we could, but just couldn't come up with the win."
