Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- After a dismal start to the season, fifth place in Western Conference seemed like lofty aspirations for the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored 44 points and Shaquille O'Neal added 27 and 12 rebounds as the Lakers clinched the fifth seed in the Western Conference with a 117-111 victory over the Golden State Warriors in the season finale for both teams. Los Angeles lost 19 of its first 30 games and had many wondering if the three-time defending champions would even make the playoffs. But the Lakers went 39-13 since December 25 and barely missed gaining home-court advantage in the playoffs. "It's real important to finish strong and we didn't want to burn our guys out," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "I think we were OK playing at the pace we did since the All-Star break. But I had to crush them a little bit this last two months simply because the schedule is so tough. But we've stayed tuned in and the guys played real hard." The experienced Lakers players don't seem concerned with where they finished in the standings. Los Angeles will face the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round. "We could have been the fourth seed but we let one slip away," O'Neal said. "I think the second half we did better this year than last year so we have a little momentum going here. We know who we play in the first round so we'll be ready for our opponent in the first round and we just have to take it from there." "We just want to prepare as much as possible and let the chips fall where they may," Bryant said. "It's been a crazy year, but hard work pays off." Los Angeles (50-32) reached 50 wins for the seventh time in eight seasons by winning the last game of the NBA's 1,189-game schedule. The Warriors had a 106-105 lead after Gilbert Arenas made a runner with 4:40 remaining. But the Lakers responded with 12 consecutive points, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Derek Fisher. Bryant had a jumper and two free throws during the spurt, which gave Los Angeles a 117-106 cushion with 67 seconds remaining. Rick Fox scored 10 points and and Robert Horry grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won 11 of their last 13 games heading into the postseason. Arenas finished with 33 points and rookie Mike Dunleavy scored a season-high 21 as Golden State (38-44) finished its best regular season since 1993-94 despite losing its last four games. "Even though we lost the last four, it was a good year for us," Arenas said. "A lot of players worked real hard over the summer to improve their games and it worked out." "At the beginning of the season we did not know how good we could be," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "I think confidence started to build and we started to win ballgames. But we didn't quit. I don't think we trailed off to much at the end." Jason Richardson scored 19 points and Antawn Jamison collected 15 and 10 rebounds as the Warriors played without forward Troy Murphy, who was serving a league suspension. The teams were tied seven times and exchanged the lead nine times in the first half. Golden State had a 56-54 lead with 79 seconds left in the first half, but Los Angeles carried an 11-4 run into the third quarter. After a three-point play by O'Neal, Bryant capped the second quarter with a 3-pointer for a 60-56 halftime advantage. Mark Madsen opened the second half with a hook shot and Fox buried a 3-pointer before Bryant's jumper game the Lakers a 67-58 lead with 9:23 to go.
