Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The inside-outside combination of Jamaal Magloire and David Wesley was too much for the Orlando Magic. Magloire scored a career-high 27 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had a pivotal block and Wesley had 28 points to lead the New Orleans Hornets to a 100-98 victory over the Orlando Magic. "I worked tremendously hard on my game (during the summer)," Magloire said. "I know we have confidence in me and I have confidence in myself." Magloire's block of Tracy McGrady's layup attempt with five seconds left sealed the win and spoiled Orlando's home opener. "(McGrady) had the ball in his hands. My purpose was just to change his shot," Magloire said. "I knew he was going to the basket expecting a foul and I was able to get the big block." Baron Davis contributed 22 points, eight assists and five rebounds and hit 5-of-8 3-pointers. Darrell Armstrong, who spent nine seasons with Orlando, had four points and two steals in 20 minutes. He shot 2-for-8 and missed all five 3-point shots. Armstrong also was in uniform for the Hornets for a 105-98 preseason victory over Orlando. "(The bitterness) is kind of gone now," Armstrong said, "because I am trying to move on and play basketball. I wish them luck." McGrady, last-season's NBA scoring champion, collected 33 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Drew Gooden added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Juwan Howard had 15 and seven. "When we were up by five, I definitely thought it was our game," McGrady said. "A few mental mistakes down at the end cost us the game. But there again, it showed the mental toughness of this team. Although we're down by 10, kept our composure, we got some stops and executed on the offensive end." Orlando held New Orleans scoreless for a nearly seven-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and went on a 8-0 run to take a 85-84 lead. Wesley ended the drought with a jumper with 5:15 left and the Hornets took the lead with 35 seconds remaining on a driving layup by George Lynch. Magic guard Tyronn Lue left in the third quarter with a cut over his right eye. He returned later in the period after receiving five stitches and finished with 12 points. Gordan Giricek was held to four points in 13 minutes and left in the third quarter with a strained right arch. He did not return. Orlando overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit Wednesday to win its season opener but fell short back home as it was outrebounded, 43-36. "I told them that if you're going to commit to a team, you're going to have nights when you pull off wins that you might shouldn't have had, like last night," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "And you're going to give up wins that you should have, and they're going to hurt." The Hornets missed six of their first eight shots from the field but heated up quickly, making seven of the next eight. The hot shooting sparked a 15-4 run that put New Orleans ahead, 23-15. Magloire dominated inside with 13 points during the burst. Orlando responded with a 12-2 run to tie it, 27-27, at the end of the first quarter. New Orleans used a half-court trap to force first-round pick Reece Gaines and Shammond Williams into turnovers and built a 41-34 lead. Gaines was scoreless in three minutes. McGrady's dunk and a jumper by Lue helped Orlando take a 51-50 halftime lead. "There's some good things I like about the team and there's some things that we absolutely have to work out," Rivers said. "Our second unit didn't help us a whole bunch tonight." Magloire's dunk and back-to-back 3-pointers by Wesley gave the Hornets a 79-69 lead in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by McGrady and a jumper by Lue sliced Orlando's deficit to 84-78 at the end of the period. After a layup by Magloire, McGrady responded with a jumper and a 3-pointer to build a 98-93 lead with 2:11 remaining. But the Magic did not score again. "We just kept fighting," Armstrong said. "We just didn't give up, especially on the road. That is a lot of character and something these guys have definitely shown." Davis drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 98-96 with 93 seconds to go. Wesley tied it 20 seconds later with a driving layup. New Orleans hit 45 percent (35-of-78) of its shots and scored 40 points in the paint. The Hornets also were 23-of-26 from the free-throw line. First-round pick David West was effective inside for New Orleans, scoring nine points and grabbing five rebounds in just nine minutes. Orlando was just as good from the line at 28-of-33 while connecting at 41 percent (32-of-78) from the field.
