Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Richard Hamilton's hot shooting was more than enough to cool off a fourth-quarter rally by the Miami Heat. Hamilton scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to lift the Detroit Pistons to a 93-81 victory over the winless Heat and give coach Larry Brown his first win with his new team. "Rip (Hamilton) struggled early, then came up huge." Brown said. "He made some nice shots." "They called my play in the fourth quarter," said Hamilton. "Chauncey (Billups) did a great job of getting me the ball in position. I just try to do what I do." Billups scored 27 points while Corliss Williamson added 12 for Detroit, which lost its opener at home to Indiana on Wednesday. "We controlled the tempo tonight," Billups said. "I was trying to set the tone. On the road we need to be aggressive. My guys feed off me." Ben Wallace dominated the paint for the Pistons with four blocks and 15 rebounds, extending his streak of games with double-digit rebounds against Miami to 15. Detroit led, 76-62, at the end of three quarters. But Miami went on a 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 76-70 with just under eight minutes remaining. Hamilton scored 12 points during a decisive 17-8 run that gave Detroit a 93-78 lead with 1:23 to go. Eddie Jones scored 20 points and rookie Udonis Haslem added 16 and 11 rebounds for the Heat, who fell to a league-worst 0-3. "We have to focus in a bit more defensive-wise," Jones said. "We just didn't get the job done tonight. We need to execute a lot better on the offensive end." Heat forward Lamar Odom returned to the lineup after missing Wednesday's game with a sprained right ankle and scored 12 points. He repeatedly beat his defender off the dribble but was unable to finish and shot just 4-for-15 from the field. Andre Dawson, Juan Pierre and Dontrelle Willis, members of the World Series champion Florida Marlins, were honored between the first and second periods. Pistons first-round pick Darko Milicic was scoreless in just one minute of play and committed two turnovers. The second overall pick in the draft, the 7-foot Milicic did not play Wednesday. Elden Campbell and Wallace outmuscled Miami in the paint to help the Pistons build a 19-8 lead with a 4:11 remaining in the first quarter. "Udonis Haslem was incredible against Ben Wallace," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We just could not get any shots to go down." The Heat hit just 36 percent (30-of-84) of their shots but Detroit connected on 43 percent (30-of-69). Miami outrebounded Detroit, 26-14, in the first half to remain within striking distance. Brian Grant's tip-in at the halftime buzzer cut the deficit to 47-38. Detroit opened up the second half with a 10-2 run to build a 57-40 cushion with 8:36 left in the third period.
