Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Richard Jefferson had the bounce-back game he wanted. But the New Jersey Nets may be more concerned about Kenyon Martin's status. Jefferson scored 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting and Jason Kidd notched a triple-double as the Nets posted an 84-61 rout over the Minnesota Timberwolves that was marred by Martin's ankle injury in the second half. After raising its Eastern Conference and Atlantic Division banners, New Jersey scored the game's first 10 points and never looked back. Jefferson, who shot only 3-of-13 in Wednesday's season-opening loss at Toronto, had 10 points after one quarter as the Nets built a 24-10 advantage. "I thought, 'We'll see how much he's matured (after the loss),'" Nets coach Byron Scott said. "I think he's answered all of the questions. He's grown and he's a superstar in the making. He played extremely well tonight and we needed it." Martin landed hard on his left ankle while trying to defend Minnesota's Latrell Sprewell early in the second half. In obvious pain, Martin banged his fist hard on the floor a couple of times and had to be carried off. He was taken to a hospital and X-rays were negative. "We have to take it upon ourselves to pick it up," Kidd said. "We're going to call on everybody for the next couple of weeks until we get K-Mart back." Kidd recorded his 51st career triple-double with 21 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds. Martin had 11 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes. "I've been blessed to have the best point guard in the world on my team," Jefferson said. "He had another triple-double tonight, so as long as I continue to work on my game with him on my team, I'll continue to be blessed." Minnesota was held to its lowest total in franchise history. The previous low was 66 against Atlanta on April 12, 1997. "We were discombobulated a little bit," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We got guys that are still a little confused at where they're supposed to be. It's going to be a process for guys to understand where they need to be." The Timberwolves also managed just nine points in the fourth quarter, matching its record for fewest points in a final period set on March 31, 2001 in a victory over the Nets. Kevin Garnett was the only player for Minnesota in double figures with 23 points, adding six rebounds. Garnett managed only eight points and one rebound in the first half. "We lost the game on defense," Garnett said. "Defense is one thing on the team when we communicate, we can all come together and do well." After Martin's injury, Minnesota scored eight of the next 11 points, getting within 49-44 on a basket by Garnett with 7:12 left in the third quarter. Kidd dominated the next four minutes, scoring three points and assisting on dunks by Jefferson and Alonzo Mourning in a 9-0 tear for a 58-44 bulge with 3:24 to go. "Once Kenyon went out, we had that little slide," Jefferson said. "Me and J-Kidd, we're going to have to be the ones to pick it up and get everybody going again. And we did it with our defense." Jefferson had three dunks and made all five of his shots in the first quarter as Kidd ran New Jersey's fast break to perfection. The Nets held a 16-0 edge in points on the fast break and Kidd had eight assists in the second half. The Timberwolves committed 26 turnovers, which led to 21 points for New Jersey. They were a woeful 21 percent (4-of-19) in the fourth quarter. "We take pride in our defense," Kidd said. "That's been our trademark that we have to get stops. We're not a team that likes to score 100 points, we're usually in the high 80s to 90s." Sprewell turned in a dismal 4-of-18 performance from the floor and backcourt mate Sam Cassell, a former Net, was even worse at 2-of-10. Center Michael Olowokandi finished with six points, six turnovers and four fouls in 21 minutes. Only Mark Madsen's meaningless basket in the final seconds prevented Minnesota from being held below 60.
