Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs continue to trot out new point guards, but Tim Duncan remains a constant. Duncan scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead a balanced attack as the Spurs posted an 86-74 victory over the New York Knicks. With Tony Parker and newcomer Anthony Carter sidelined by injury, San Antonio signed Jason Hart on Friday and gave him his first career start. Hart had just two points and two assists as he split time with Australian guard Shane Heal, who also made his season debut. "The point guards deserve all the credit," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Jason Hart and Shane Heal did great job trying to run the show without knowing the system." Despite the lack of stability at such an important position, the Spurs are still built around Duncan. The reigning MVP was a handful for Dikembe Mutombo, whom he matched up against in last year's NBA Finals against New Jersey. Duncan shook off some early turnover problems for his third straight double-double to start the season. "I got into early foul trouble and the guys did an outstanding job, but it seems like ever time we get back into the game, we just couldn't get over the hump," Knicks center Kurt Thomas said. "The whole team didn't play well enough to win." Manu Ginobili scored six points and Duncan added four in a 14-6 run to close the first half, giving San Antonio a 48-38 halftime advantage. New York never got closer than seven points in the second half. The Spurs placed six players in double figures. Hedo Turkoglu came off the bench for 14 points and Bruce Bowen added 12. Bowen also did a credible job of shadowing Allan Houston, who led New York with 19 points. The Knicks were the only team to win the season series against the Spurs last year, taking both meetings. "We're just all trying to get on the same page," Houston said. "Tonight I just don't think we played well enough to put us in a (good) position, making poor shots." Rasho Nesterovic netted 12 points and Heal contributed 11 off the bench after missing the first two games with back problems. Ginobili added 10 points and four steals. Heal saw his first NBA action since the 1996-97 season, when he played in 43 games with Minnesota. He played 17 effective minutes and drilled a pair of 3-pointers. "I've played in a lot of countries since playing in Minnesota, but it felt good to play for the Spurs," Heal said. "It was nice to contribute something tonight. Tonight was a huge opportunity for me to show what I can do to help the team." Although Mutombo was able to stay out of foul trouble, Duncan and Nesterovic helped put Thomas on the bench for extended minutes. Thomas scored 10 points and was limited to 20 minutes due to five fouls. San Antonio held a sizeable advantage the line, converting 26-of-35 free throws. The perimeter-oriented Knicks were 15-of-16. Turkoglu showcased his best shooting of the young season. drilling 5-of-8 shots. The Spurs held a 35-18 advantage in bench points. "I just tried to do my job out there tonight to help us get the win," Turkoglu said. "It felt good to catch fire and make those shots." Keith Van Horn, who had a strong Knicks debut with 29 points Wednesday, netted 12 on 5-of-11 shooting. Van Horn took just four shots in the first half. The success of Heal and Hart may have had more to do with the Knicks' play at point guard than anything else. Charlie Ward had trouble keeping up with Hart and backup Howard Eisley picked up four fouls in 16 minutes. "I'm trying to push buttons and when you push them, you want them to work," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "I have too many guys right now that I'm trying to use." Bowen limited Houston to 6-of-16 shooting, including 0-of-4 from the arc. The Knicks misfired on 12-of-13 3-pointers.
