Game StorySAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Even without Tim Duncan and a host of others, the San Antonio Spurs were still too much to handle for the Miami Heat. Manu Ginobili had 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead the shorthanded Spurs to a 80-73 victory over the winless Miami Heat. Malik Rose added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs (3-2), who played without injured players Duncan, Tony Parker and Anthony Carter and suspended coach Gregg Popovich. "Tonight was ugly but we played some defense and made some free throws down the stretch," Ginobili said. "Tonight was tough. It would have been tough with Timmy and Tony, but tonight was really tough." "Things didn't go well for us last night but we had to come out and prove ourselves again tonight," Rose said. "We competed and gave ourselves the chance to win." Duncan, the two-time NBA MVP, suffered a sprained left ankle in Monday's game and will be out one to three weeks. Parker has been sidelined the entire season and Carter - his backup at point guard - joined him on the sidelines last week. Popovich was suspended one game by the NBA on Tuesday for making contact with an offical in Monday's contest. P.J. Carlesimo coached the Spurs in his absence. "Our guys played really hard, tonight I thought it was a good defensive effort," Carlesimo said. "We're about defense and rebounding and we told the players if we do that, the rest will take care of itself." Rose started for Duncan and was one of four Spurs in double figures. Jason Hart started at point guard and had six points and three assists in 34 minutes. Eddie Jones led Miami (0-5) with 26 points before fouling out with 4:28 left. Lamar Odom added 12 rebounds and 14 points while John Wallace had 10 off the bench. Miami, which was without injured wing players Caron Butler and rookie Dwyane Wade, cut the deficit to 74-73 on Odom's layup with 2:12 to go. But the Spurs held the Heat scoreless the rest of the way. "We thought we had a real chance to win this one with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker out with injuries," Odom said. "But they are a championship team. They know how to play without those two in the lineup." Rasho Nesterovic blocked John Wallace's shot with 1:04 left to preserve a 76-73 lead. San Antonio hit four free throws in the final 16 seconds. Rafer Alston and Udonis Haslem started for Wade and Butler. Alston had five points and four rebounds while Haslem had nine and nine. Miami shot a dismal 35 percent (24-of-68) and was outscored, 20-7, on second-chance baskets. But the Heat kept the game close behind Jones' 22 first-half points and the Spurs' inaccuracy from the free-throw line. San Antonio was 10-of-20 from the line in the first half and 26-of-41 overall. The Spurs struggled from the field as well, shooting 34 percent (25-of-73). "It was an ugly game," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That was to be expected. That was pretty predictable. They just forcefully attacked us. They killed us with fast-break points and second-chance points and free throws; they went to the line 41 times." Kevin Willis' dunk gave San Antonio a 24-14 lead with 9:30 left in the first half. But Miami went on a 21-7 run to take a 35-31 lead with 3:01 left in the second period. San Antonio battled back to take a 42-41 halftime lead. Willis, currently in his 19th season, finished with 13 points and netted the 17,000th point of his career. "It feels great," Willis said. "It's a result of all the years of hard work and perseverance."
