Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups and the Detroit Pistons came alive in the fourth quarter. Billups scored 11 of his 27 points in the final period and the Pistons rallied for their third straight win, a 96-88 triumph over the Boston Celtics. With 7:14 left, Billups' 3-pointer from the top of the key capped an 8-2 run and made it 83-78. The game remained close down the stretch until Billups' fading jumper over Mike James in the lane and a 3-pointer over James with 1:45 to go made it 93-86. "Three-pointers are a part of our team," Billups said. "We have guys who can really shoot the ball." Tayshaun Prince, who scored 14 points, hit a 3-pointer off a nice pass from Richard Hamilton with 42 seconds remaining to end any chance the Celtics had. Prince was 4-of-4 from the arc. "One thing I've learned in the NBA is that there are going to be nights where your shot isn't there and you've got to find other ways to help your team win," Hamilton said. "Tonight I was able to ... help us out, even though I wasn't really hitting." The Celtics controlled most of the game, using a 16-5 run in the second quarter to take a 54-44 lead. Paul Pierce led Boston with 20 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds but accumulated most of those numbers in in the first half. "We said we had to rebound the ball a lot better and they just crushed us on the glass," Pierce said. "We didn't come back and rebound and help our big guys." The Celtics were outrebounded, 45-40, although the teams were even on the glass in the second half, 24-24. After halftime, Ben Wallace grabbed 10 of his 13 rebounds for Detroit. "Ben is a guy that is so tenacious," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "I don't know if there's been too many more guys more aggressive on the glass that I can ever remember than Ben Wallace. He's made himself into an All-Star with that one element." Wallace, who plays mostly on the inside, indeed displayed weaknesses in other aspects of the game, shooting 3-of-9 from the field with a gruesome missed dunk in the fourth quarter. The Pistons won despite shooting 41 percent (33-of-80). Boston, which also got 20 points from Vin Baker, shot 47 percent from the field (35-of-74), but was just 2-of-13 on 3-pointers.
