Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets needed only a meeting with the Boston Celtics to get back on track. Jason Kidd collected 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and Jason Collins posted career highs with 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Nets avoided a three-game losing streak with a 94-87 victory over the Celtics. The two-time defending Eastern Conference champions lost three of their first five games as they contend with injuries to Kenyon Martin, Rodney Rogers and Lucious Harris. "We're a very resilient bunch of guys," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "We're a little beat up and our backs are against the wall. You've got no choice, either you're going to fight or you're going to lay down. We've got a bunch of guys that are fighters." "We're a very confident team, regardless," Nets forward Richard Jefferson said. "We understand that we're down and guys playing major minutes that usually don't. It was a big win for us to get back to .500." New Jersey returned to form with its eighth consecutive victory over Boston. The Nets won the final three meetings between the teams last season, then swept the Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. New Jersey's latest triumph was the 130th for Scott, who surpassed Kevin Loughery for the team record. "(The win) means we're 3-3. That's all it means right now," Scott said. "We're just trying to keep this thing together before we get everybody back." Boston rallied from a 15-point third-quarter deficit and had its largest lead of the second half at 82-80 after Raef LaFrentz's tip shot with 5:26 left brought the FleetCenter crowd to its feet. Kidd quickly helped quiet the crowd, throwing an alley-oop to Jefferson just 12 seconds later. He sliced through three defenders for a layup with 4:08 left to reclaim the lead for the Nets. Boston's Paul Pierce responded with a jumper, but Kidd answered with a leaner to put New Jersey ahead for good with 3:07 to go. Kerry Kittles had dunks off consecutive turnovers by Pierce to give the Nets a 90-84 cushion with 1:45 left. Kidd assisted on Aaron Williams' jumper with 77 seconds to play and sank a pair of free throws 48 seconds later to seal the win. "We ducked a punch," said Nets center Alonzo Mourning, who had eight points and five rebounds. "We stayed poised, stuck with our game plan, ran plays to get the ball inside and executed and made shots down the stretch." Pierce finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds and Kedrick Brown scored a career-high 18 points for Boston, which has lost three straight after winning its first two games. "It's very disappointing," Pierce said. "We had our chances and we had a team undermanned and a team that I felt like we should have beat." "They just dug a little deeper than we did," Celtics guard Marcus Banks added. "It's nothing we can't overcome as a team, but tonight they were a better basketball team and came away with a victory." The Nets closed the first half with a 13-2 run, highlighted by nine points from Collins, who buried four free throws, a jumper and completed a three-point play in a 2:07 span. "I passed up on one shot early in the second quarter and when we got to the timeout, (Jason Kidd) told me, just go on and shoot it," Collins said. "Ever since then, I just let it go." New Jersey had an 11-point halftime advantage and built its largest lead, 62-47, after Collins sank a pair of free throws with 8:35 left in the third. Boston scored 17 of the next 19 points and forged a 64-64 tie on Mark Blount's dunk with 2:59 to go in the period. Brown had six points during the spurt and Pierce five.
