Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- After the Detroit Pistons enjoyed a parade to the foul line, Richard Hamilton slammed the door on the New Jersey Nets. Hamilton scored eight of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Pistons extended their winning streak to five games with a 98-84 victory over the shorthanded Nets in the teams' first meeting since last year's Eastern Conference finals. New Jersey was whistled for eight personal fouls in the third quarter as Detroit converted 9-of-13 free throws and took a 75-70 advantage into the fourth. The Pistons shot 76 percent (25-of-33) from the free-throw line in the game. Hamilton's 3-pointer with 6:35 to go triggered a run of seven straight points that gave the Pistons breathing room. Corliss Williamson drove the baseline for a dunk and Hamilton added a jumper for an 89-78 cushion with just over five minutes left. "It was big," Hamilton said. "We have to take care of home, and tonight we were able to do that by beating a great team." The Nets played without injured regulars Kenyon Martin, Lucious Harris and Rodney Rogers. New Jersey was further hampered when Alonzo Mourning and Aaron Williams each picked up a fifth foul in a 14-second span late in the third quarter. "You just have to deal with it," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We're thin with the big men we have. When you have both of them getting in foul trouble, that's going to hurt you on the offensive end and the defensive end as far as the rotation goes. It was just one of those nights." The Nets fell to 1-17 in their last 18 regular-season games at Detroit. New Jersey swept Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals last year, causing the Pistons to fire coach Rick Carlisle and hire Larry Brown. Jason Kidd, playing a season-high 45 minutes, finished with 18 points and 11 assists. Kerry Kittles added 17 points, but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter. "We're shorthanded, but when coach asks you to do something, (you do it)," Kidd said. "I feel fine. Going into the fourth quarter, you want to keep it close on the road and we had that opportunity. We just fell to the pressure and also made some bad decisions." Richard Jefferson netted 13 points, Williams added 13 and Jason Collins chipped in 11 and 10 rebounds. Jefferson logged 44 minutes and Collins 43 due to the combination of injuries and fouls. "I don't want to play Jason 45 minutes," Scott said. "I don't want to play Richard and `Twin' (Collins) the minutes that they're playing right now. These guys coming off the bench have to show they belong out there. Tonight, when they came out, they didn't look like they were ready to play, and that cost us." New Jersey's 21 turnovers led to 24 points. "We're not making a big deal about last year," Pistons forward Ben Wallace said. "But we also know that to come out of the East, the road is probably going to go through Jersey. So that makes it a big win." Williamson scored a season-high 20 points off the bench and Wallace collected 12 and 11 rebounds. On a night when Chauncey Billups and Tayshaun Prince combined to make 4-of-22 shots, Hamilton drilled 10-of-17 attempts. "I got the ball in some good spots," Williamson said. "I was able to hit a few good shots early and get some confidence." New Jersey used an 11-0 run that featured five points from Williams to establish a 24-11 advantage. Kidd made a pair of free throws to cap the burst moments after Brown chewed out his team in a timeout. "We were so passive early on defense," Brown said. "We let them run their stuff and that was a big difference when we went to the bench. I think that is when Chauncey and everybody else picked up." The Pistons responded with a 19-4 spurt for a 30-28 advantage on Zeljko Rebraca's layup 8:49 before halftime. Detroit took a 48-47 lead into the locker room. Detroit took off after the back-to-back fouls on Mourning and Williams, scoring eight straight points to take the lead for good. On one sequence, New Jersey got a pair of offensive rebounds and missed three shots. The Nets slowed down noticeably, shooting 35 percent (13-of-37) in the second half. Kidd and Kittles combined to make 2-of-10 shots after halftime. The Pistons have won six of eight regular-season matchups with the Nets since Kidd joined the team for the 2001-02 season.
