Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Vlade Divac's savvy helped the Sacramento Kings survive a tight finish. Divac came up with four points and a key assist in the final 3 1/2 minutes as the Kings ended the Detroit Pistons' five-game winning streak with a 97-91 victory. Detroit played without two-time Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace, who sat out with a left ankle sprain. But the Pistons rallied from a 15-point deficit and took an 87-84 lead with 3:47 left on a runner by Tayshaun Prince. Divac posted up on the next two possessions, drawing fouls on Corliss Williamson and sinking four free throws for an 88-87 advantage. Divac finished with 13 points and nine assists. "In the second half, I got more aggressive and I told coach and the guys to give me the ball down low, and they did and it worked out for us," Divac said. After Williamson's layup put the Pistons back on top, 89-88, Divac's nifty shovel pass led to Brad Miller set up a three-point play that gave the Kings the lead for good with 2:31 to go. Peja Stojakovic added a layup off an inbounds feed from Doug Christie 28 seconds later. The Pistons had chances to cut into the deficit, but Richard Hamilton committed a pair of turnovers in the final two minutes. Hamilton made just 4-of-15 shots but led Detroit with 19 points. "It was a tough game," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "Detroit played tough the whole game and their guys hung in there. They took the lead in the fourth quarter and we were able to come back and made some good plays down the stretch offensively." Mike Bibby scored 23 points and reserve Bobby Jackson added 16 as Sacramento placed six players in double figures. Christie scored 14 points and Stojakovic added 12. With Wallace out of the game, Sacramento shot 51 percent (21-of-41) in the first half and built a 50-43 advantage. The Kings' unselfishness resulted in 29 assists on 38 baskets. The Pistons managed just nine assists on 31 hoops, a record low for a Kings' opponent. Hamilton and Chauncey Billups each had three. "Everybody knows what Ben means to our team," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "But it's not up to Ben Wallace to be passing the ball and getting people involved. It's up to our guards, our perimeter people. And we never did that." Detroit's approach was especially poor in the first half, when it had one assist and shot 30 percent (12-of-40). The Pistons turned it around in the second half but were complained it was too late. "We were relying on penetrating and doing 1-on-1 type things," Prince said. "And we got caught the last two minutes just trying to make plays and not playing team basketball." Sacramento scored 19 of the first 30 points in the second half, taking its biggest lead at 69-54 on Christie's jumper with 5:27 left in the third quarter. Detroit crawled within 75-70 at the end of the period on Billups' runner at the buzzer. Billups scored 17 points and reserves Mehmet Okur and Corliss Williamson combined for 31. But perimeter starters Prince, Hamilton and Billups combined for 33 percent (14-of-42) shooting.
