Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- The Houston Rockets may have a new coach in Jeff Van Gundy, but they have the same old trouble trying to solve the Dallas Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki overcame an illness to score 23 points and Antoine Walker added 17, 12 rebounds and seven assists as the Mavericks cruised past the Rockets, 97-86, for their ninth win in the last 11 meetings. Steve Nash chipped in 16 points, Michael Finley had 14 and Antawn Jamison 13 for Dallas, which has won six of its last eight overall and improved to 4-0 at home. "I thought we did a good job, for the most part, defensively," said Nash, who helped limit Rockets guard Cuttino Mobley to nine points on 2-of-10 shooting after he averaged 23.7 points on 64 percent shooting in his previous three contests. "We stuck to the game plan and had a high level of concentration and intensity, and we covered for each other." "It was a hard-fought game," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Nowitzki was also ill. He looked about as white as I've ever seen him look." Jimmy Jackson scored 23 points against his former team, Steve Francis had 15 and Yao Ming and Kelvin Cato 12 apiece for the Rockets, who failed in a bid for their first 6-1 start since opening the 1996-97 season at 15-1. "I can't talk about last year's games (when Dallas swept Houston), but today we didn't play our game," Yao said through an interpreter. "We played a game that was strange to us, and that is why we lost." The game was tied, 53-53, before Finley nailed a jumper to put Dallas ahead for good with 9:21 left in the third quarter. The basket sparked a 26-10 run over the next 7 1/2 minutes that put the Mavericks in control. Dallas shot 45 percent (36-of-80) while limiting Houston to 40 percent (33-of-82). "We couldn't convert. We got the shots that we wanted," Francis said. "We got open jump shots that we have been taking throughout the preseason and the regular season, we just weren't knocking them down. The way you go about not knocking down shots is to play tougher defense. They were getting a lot of easy looks." After Finley scored on a fast-break dunk that gave Dallas a 93-77 lead with just under five minutes remaining, the Rockets called a timeout and Francis slammed the ball on the court. "(The Mavericks) played well and that is where it starts," Van Gundy said. "We feel that emotionally we allowed frustration to not allow us to play as well as we are capable of playing in the second half. It's hard to play well frustrated, whatever it is."
