Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Utah Jazz used their fresh legs to get their first road win. Carlos Arroyo scored a career-high 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting as the Jazz cruised to a 85-77 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves looked sluggish less than 24 hours after Thursday's overtime victory over the Chicago Bulls. They struggled from the start and never led against the Jazz, who had not played since Wednesday. Utah is unbeaten in four games at the Delta Center but lost its first four road games before beating Minnesota for the second time this season. "At home we tend to play harder than we do on the road," Arroyo said. "We need to bring the same energy on the road. It's great to get a road win and build some confidence." "We have to be happy, because we haven't won a game on the road," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "Carlos did a great job pushing the ball up the floor and we got some easy baskets because of it. Everyone shot in a good rhythm." Arroyo scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first quarter as the Jazz jumped out to a 26-16 lead. They were never seriously threatened thereafter as the Timberwolves did not get closer than eight points. The 24-year-old Arroyo, trying to fill the shoes of John Stockton, was 3-of-3 from the floor in the second quarter, when he had eight points. He buried a jumper to give Utah its biggest lead at 45-34 with 3:26 left. Arroyo shattered his previous career high of 18 points, eclipsing the mark when he buried a free throw less than five minutes into the third quarter. "I felt every shot was going in for me," he said. "I was open a lot and didn't force any shots. I think the last time I had 30 points was for my club team in Puerto Rico, but my job is to run the team and get the ball to open people." "I think he is very good for the future of the Jazz, especially with John (Stockton) gone," Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko said. "(The Timberwolves) needed to double-team him, which gave us a good chance to be open and shoot easy jumpers." The Timberwolves had a chance to slice the deficit to six points twice in the final 6 1/2 minutes, but Arroyo and Kirilenko answered with jumpers to stifle the comeback. Arroyo severely ouplayed Minnesota point guard Sam Cassell, who scored 11 points and had only three assists while committing six turnovers. "Arroyo has been solid," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "There are no bad players in this league. On any given night, someone can go out there and kick your butt." Matt Harpring had 12 points and nine rebounds and Kirilenko scored finished with 11 points for Utah, which improved to 1-2 on a four-game road trip. The Jazz visit Milwaukee on Saturday before opening a six-game homestand. Kevin Garnett had 23 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists as the Timberwolves shot just 39 percent (29-of-72) from the field and committed 20 turnovers. "Our offense has been disappointing," Saunders said. "We have no pace, we're slow pushing the ball up the floor. We have to go back and worst hard, develop some flow on offense."
