Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Mike Miller was the missing ingredient the Memphis Grizzlies needed to beat the Dallas Mavericks. Miller made a huge jumper late in regulation and scored four of his season-high 22 points to start overtime as the Grizzlies snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Mavericks with a 108-101 victory. Memphis had lost 11 consecutive meetings with Dallas since its last win on November 8, 2000. The Grizzlies were swept in the 2002-03 season series but did not face the Mavericks with Miller, who was acquired in midseason trade and sat out with a back injury in the last meeting between the teams. Miller gave Memphis a 95-92 lead with a spinning jump shot in the lane with 16 seconds left in regulation. Dallas recovered and sent the game to overtime when Antoine Walker's long 3-point banker bounced in at the buzzer. "We ran a designed play where I got the pass," Walker said. "I couldn't get one to go all night, but I got the important one to go." "That's basketball," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "He shot it from Chicago. He was so far behind the 3-point line and as you know, he is such a great shooter. It was a miraculous shot." Miller helped the Grizzlies quickly regain momentum, opening the extra session with a spinning fast-break layup. He added a pair of free throws with 4:02 left and Jason Williams, who had a season-high 20 points, followed with a 3-pointer for a 102-95 edge. "The momentum was definitely back on their side, so it was tough," Miller said. "We were aggressive early, got some buckets and made it to the free throw line." The Grizzlies held on for just their fifth win in 32 all-time meetings with the Mavericks, including their first in nine games since moving to Memphis. "We're beating teams now that we hadn't beaten, so it feels very good," Memphis forward Pau Gasol said. "We've got to feel proud, realize how good we are and go after every team, no matter who they are." "We didn't think it was going to be an easy game coming in here," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We battled our best, but we just didn't seem to have enough in overtime." Gasol collected 17 points and 16 rebounds and James Posey scored 12 points for Memphis, which is 5-4 for the first time in franchise history. Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki left the game in the third quarter after colliding with Posey and received eight stitches along his eyebrow. He returned but missed his last four shots and fouled in the final minute of overtime with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Michael Finley also scored 19 points and Steve Nash collected 16 and eight assists but committed eight of the Mavericks' 17 turnovers, leading to 18 points for the Grizzlies.
