Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The inside-outside combination of Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jason Terry was more than enough to lift the Atlanta Hawks to victory. Abdur-Rahim had 27 points and 11 rebounds while Terry added 19 to help Atlanta post a 101-93 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. "It's nothing new for me, I just came out and played," Abdur-Rahim said. "I came out aggressive and things worked out." Dion Glover contributed 12 points and Stephen Jackson had 11 for Atlanta, which snapped a nine-game losing streak at the Bradley Center. The Hawks' last road win in Milwaukee was February 10, 1998. The Hawks punished Milwaukee inside early, scoring 38 of their 56 first-half points in the paint. Abdur-Rahim had 14 points at halftime to help Atlanta build a nine-point lead. "I always think that is a misleading stat," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "Obviously you are scoring in the paint, but a lot of transition points are in the paint." First-round pick Boris Diaw hit one of two free throws to give Atlanta a 30-29 cushion early in the second quarter and the Hawks never trailed. Tim Thomas led Milwaukee with 17 points, Michael Redd had 12 and Joe Smith contributed 10 and nine rebounds. First-round pick T.J. Ford had eight points and seven assists but sat for most of the fourth quarter as the Bucks tried to mount a comeback. "Every night is an experience and we just have to continue to get better, that's the main part in the NBA," Ford said. "It's still just basketball, nothing's really changed you still have to put the ball in the hole and not turn it over and not foul." Atlanta shot 46 percent (38-of-83) from the field and outrebounded Milwaukee, 48-41. The Hawks also recorded 22 assists while committing a season-low 14 turnovers to snap a two-game losing streak. "Our turnovers come in a variety of fashions," Stotts said. "We just have to maintain focus about it. A lot of it is just mental and making good decisions." Despite coming off a tough home loss to Washington on Monday, Atlanta played aggressively. The Hawks outscored Milwaukee inside, 50-28 and bested the Bucks in fast-break points, 26-18. Milwaukee failed to match the intensity and was outscored 18-9 in second-chance points. "They were more aggressive than we were, they seemed to be getting all the loose balls," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "In the first half they were outrebounding us. I think we gave up at least 15 fast-break points in the first half." Jason Terry's 3-pointer gave Atlanta its biggest lead, 91-71, with 7:51 remaining. Milwaukee managed to cut into the deficit by drawing fouls and hitting free throws but poor shooting eventually led to its downfall. The Bucks hit 32-of-38 (84 percent) free throws but shot 38 percent (29-of-77) from the field. Milwaukee's shooting woes can be traced to poor ball movement. The Bucks had a season-low 18 assists while committing 15 turnovers.
