Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Baron Davis practically couldn't miss from 3-point range, but rookie David West couldn't make a layup. West missed a wide-open layup at the buzzer, allowing the Indiana Pacers to remain unbeaten on the road with a 76-75 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Davis scored 33 points as he continued his season-long assault from the arc, making 7-of-10 3-pointers. But he missed one in the waning seconds with the Hornets trailing by one point. Jermaine O'Neal was fouled on the rebound and missed both free throws. The Hornets called timeout with 1.1 seconds left and devised a play that used Davis as a decoy. Davis came up from the baseline and set a back pick on Al Harrington, freeing West to go to the basket as Sean Rooks lobbed a perfect inbounds pass toward the rim. West, who had not played in the second half until that point, jumped, caught the ball and put it off the backboard. But the short shot bounced out as the horn sounded. "I caught it going up," West said. "I didn't have time to come down and go back up. Maybe I could have shot it a little softer, but it was a great look. I've got to knock that one in." "We got great execution and would have run it the same way," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. "He's got great hands. It just didn't go down." O'Neal had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Ron Artest scored 22 points for Indiana, which improved to 6-0 on the road and 10-2 overall, both NBA bests. "You can't apologize for winning and you can't apologize for the other team missing, even though they ran a great play and they had us beat," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. After West's miss, Floyd stormed off the court, throwing aside his suit jacket. He may have been more upset at the call that put Indiana's Reggie Miller on the line for the game-winning free throws with 8.4 seconds to go. A great clutch shooter, Miller was running past screens along the baseline and being hounded by David Wesley, who was called for a foul before Miller even got the ball. "I talked about not fouling and I don't feel like we did," Floyd said. "I feel like Reggie sold and the official bought. He's an old veteran and been doing that for years, hooking his arm underneath and making the call look like it goes the other way." "Before the play even started, I went up to Jack and Courtney (referees Jack Nies and Courtney Kirkland) and told them, 'He's going to push off,'" Wesley said. "And I responded to the push-off. He flopped and those guys (Pacers) know that." Miller, also an outstanding free-throw shooter, wasn't about to argue. "I'm one of those players who likes players to decide ballgames, but is it a foul?" he asked. "Yes, it's a foul and they would call it at any other time of the game." Artest scored five straight points for the Pacers to get them within 75-74 with 1:36 to play. Artest has scored at least 20 points in every road game. The third quarter belonged to Davis, who made a franchise-record five 3-pointers and scored 18 points as he turned an eight-point deficit into a 64-63 lead entering the final period. "They were leaving me open, and we were down eight, so I figured it's up to me to lead the comeback," Davis said. "We started playing some defense and got some transition buckets, but it got away at the end."
