Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers had no trouble getting easy shots without Shaquille O'Neal. Kobe Bryant scored 28 points in 32 minutes and Karl Malone tied a season-high with 20 points and had 10 rebounds as the Lakers rolled to a 121-89 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers continued their dominance in the all-time series with the Grizzlies, winning for the 30th time in 33 games and remaining unbeaten in 17 home games. Los Angeles avenged its November 6 loss in Memphis, shooting a season-high 59 percent (45-of-76) from the floor and 27-of-30 from the free-throw line en route to its most lopsided win of the season. Malone made 6-of-7 shots and Bryon Russell was 5-of-6 and scored 14 points. Stanislav Medvedenko collected 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting and a career-high 11 rebounds in his season debut to help pick up the slack for O'Neal, who is sidelined with a calf injury. "We have guys that can score on this team and it's nice when we have some key guys out, other guys have to step up," Malone said. "That's what this team is about. Shaq wasn't playing, we know we have a lot of confidence in what we're doing." The Lakers remained one of three unbeaten home teams in the NBA with their 22nd consecutive regular-season home win - the third longest streak in franchise history and the second longest since moving to Los Angeles. "We're playing extremely well at home," Bryant said. "We're comfortable here on our home floor. It's been a problem here in the past but it doesn't seem to be like we're having any problems with it now." The Grizzlies had a 48-46 lead before the Lakers closed the first half with a 14-2 run. Bryant and Russell, who scored all the points during the spurt, opened it with back-to-back 3-pointers. After Memphis' Pau Gasol buried a hook shot, Bryant made a layup and added two free throws for a 55-48 lead with 1:51 to go. Russell added a turnaround jumper and Bryant capped the first half with jumper for a 59-48 cushion with 49 seconds left. "It really sparked some momentum for us and took a lot away from them and we carried it the second half," Bryant said of the run. Gary Payton, who had 17 points and 10 assists, scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting in the third quarter, when the Lakers made 10-of-15 shots to pull away. Bryant left the game for good with 9:15 left as Los Angeles got a chance to rest its starters. O'Neal is considered day-to-day and is questionable for Wednesday's game against Washington. Shane Battier scored 18 points and Pau Gasol added 14 for the Grizzlies, who committed 24 turnovers leading to 29 points for the Lakers. "This is our first bad game," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "We've been in very game. Tonight was one of those things. We couldn't do a damn thing. There was no way we were stemming the tide."
