Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Shandon Anderson scored 10 of his season-high 28 points in a big third quarter as the New York Knicks rallied for a 94-88 victory over the Boston Celtics. The Knicks trailed by 10 points at halftime but outscored the Celtics, 34-12, in the third quarter. Anderson's 3-pointer gave New York the lead for good, 58-56, with 8:29 left in the period. Howard Eisley followed with a layup for a four-point lead. Walter McCarty got Boston within 62-60 with a jumper with 5:49 to go, but the Knicks closed the quarter with a 13-3 run. They held off the Celtics in the fourth quarter, snapping a four-game losing streak in Boston. "I thought we tightened up defensively," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "I thought we got into guys a little bit more. I thought we stepped up on defense, and we've been doing that late. I'd like to see us do that four quarters." Kurt Thomas had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Dikembe Mutombo added 13 and 12 for New York, which has won two in a row for the first time this season. "We're playing playing well together, passing the ball to each other and feeding off each other," Thomas said. "We don't care who shoots the ball as long as we are playing defense on the other end." The Knicks played for the second straight game without their top two scorers Allan Houston and Keith Van Horn, who are sidelined with a sore lower back and sprained right ankle, respectively. Houston and Van Horn had big games against Boston on November 17, when New York overcame a 16-point halftime deficit to post an 89-86 victory. Monday's win was more of a team effort. "When you're shorthanded, you just have to feel confident enough to just let it go and that's what we've been doing the last couple games," said Knicks forward Clarence Weatherspoon, who had 12 points and six rebounds in a season-high 27 minutes. "I think it was a big defensive effort for us, we came out in the third quarter and set a great tone for the rest of the half and just played off that energy." Mutombo had one of his better all-round games for the Knicks with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. He moved into fifth place on the all-time blocks list with 2,896, passing former Knick and fellow Georgetown alum Patrick Ewing. "We are just working together to get chemistry going as a team, we are working so hard in practice," Mutombo said. Vin Baker scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Paul Pierce contributed 16 and 10, but the Celtics lost their fourth straight game. Boston also had a halftime lead Friday before losing at Philadelphia, 87-85. "Third quarter again, we have to go out and play well in the third quarter and get a win," Baker said. "There's not excuses, not at this point. I can't put my finger on the mistakes but it's obviously the third quarter that has been gigantic for us. It hasn't been good for us in any of our games."
