Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After Steve Francis bounced back early, Cuttino Mobley took over late. Francis scored 13 of his 19 points in the opening 24 minutes and Mobley added 15 of his 17 in the second half as the Houston Rockets posted a 105-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Francis was coming off an awful showing in Friday's loss at Portland, where he was held to a season-low four points, did not get to the foul line and engaged in a shouting match with several Trail Blazers at the end of the game. But the two-time All-Star guard rebounded with a strong performance as the Rockets built a 55-41 halftime lead. "Friday I didn't really take that many shots," Francis said. "But I thought I played a pretty decent game tonight. That's what you got to live for. You can't really look at the last game and see what you did. You got to look at the future and see what you can do. That's the way I look at the situation." Mobley struggled through a difficult 1-of-7 shooting performance in the opening half, but came alive in the second half as the Rockets shot 56 percent (20-of-36) over the final two quarters and avoided back-to-back losses for the first time under new coach Jeff Van Gundy. "(It was) definitely time for me to step up," Mobley said. "I was missing too many easy shots in the first half." With Elton Brand and Marko Jaric already out with foot injuries, the Clippers lost Quentin Richardson to a twisted left ankle in the first quarter. They got 33 points from Corey Maggette but he managed just four points in the fourth as Los Angeles suffered its fourth consecutive loss. "They got a good team," Maggette said. "As soon as 'Q (Richardson)' went down it put us in a really tough situation. We're outmanned right now, especially with Elton and now with 'Q' hurting his ankle." The Rockets built their lead to 16 points when Francis hit a jumper with 5:22 remaining in the third. The lead dwindled to 73-66 when Los Angeles center Predrag Drobnjak nailed a 3-pointer at the top of the key as time expired in the third. But the Clippers, who shot 34 percent (28-of-82), didn't get any closer. Former Los Angeles 3-point specialist Eric Piatkowski and Moochie Norris nailed 3-pointers on Houston's first two possessions, triggering a 13-4 run. Besides the big games from Francis and Mobley, the Rockets got solid efforts from Yao Ming and Maurice Taylor. Yao scored all 18 of his points in the first half and Taylor chipped in 11 of his 17 in the fourth quarter.
