Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury, Jahidi White and Amare Stoudemire registered double-doubles as the Phoenix Suns rolled to a 121-90 rout of the Dallas Mavericks, who continue to struggle on the road. Marbury scored 20 points and dished out 12 assists for his fifth straight double-double. White contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds and Stoudemire chipped in 10 and 10, helping the Suns post a season high in points. Joe Jackson had 21 points to pace the Suns, who reached the century mark early in the fourth quarter and snapped the Mavericks' four-game winning streak. "It's the NBA and we came out yesterday and lost by 30," Johnson said, referring to a 110-80 defeat at Denver. "Tonight we came out and handed Dallas a similar defeat." "We had it tonight," Phoenix guard Penny Hardaway added. "We talked about it and came out ready to play. We came out with the mind-set and the attitude from the beginning that we wanted it, and it showed." Dallas played most of the game without forward Dirk Nowitzki, who suffered a sprained right ankle with 4:45 remaining the opening quarter and did not return. Antawn Jamison scored 17 points and Antoine Walker and Michael Finley added 14 apiece for the Mavericks, who are 8-0 at home but just 2-5 on the road. "We just didn't show up," said Dallas coach Don Nelson, whose team was outrebounded, 53-32. "I'm very disappointed with the peformance." "We couldn't do anything right out there, whether it was on the offensive end or the defensive end," Jamison added. "I don't know what the final tally was on rebounding, but they killed us. We didn't play with the energy we played with the last four or five games." The Suns had a 26-23 lead after one quarter, then took control in the second and built a 63-47 advantage at intermission. "We were knocking down shots, but our main thing was defense," Johnson said. "We were moving in the zone and just being real active, which led to a lot of fast-break points." The game was marred by an ugly incident with 2:58 left in the first quarter when Mavericks forward Danny Fortson pushed Phoenix rookie Zarko Cabarkapa, who was going in for a layup. Cabarkapa fractured his right wrist and will be sidelined six to eight weeks. Fortson could be suspended and did not get much support, even in his own locker room. "I don't condone those types of things," Nelson said. "It was just a bad basketball play that shouldn't have happened, and Danny and I will talk about it tomorrow."
