Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace showed up when he was needed most. Wallace and Damon Stoudamire had big fourth quarters as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied for a 97-93 victory over the New Jersey Nets. Known for his erratic behavior on and off the court, Wallace was benched by coach Maurice Cheeks after missing the morning shootaround. He also failed to show on the court, scoring just two points on 1-of-9 shooting in the first three quarters. But Wallace made 4-of-5 shots and scored nine points in the final period, helping the Trail Blazers overcome a six-point deficit. "My most satisfying win since I've been here, I think," said Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks, who is in his third season. Stoudamire was even better in the fourth quarter, when he scored 12 of his 28 points while holding his own against All-Star point guard Jason Kidd. "Damon Stoudamire was great," Cheeks said. "He always plays hard. He doesn't always hit his shots like he did tonight, but he always comes ready to play. Him and Jeff (McInnis) in the fourth quarter really caught fire, and Rasheed's game gave us a lift there, too." Kidd finished with 27 points as the Nets fell to 2-1 on a five-game road trip. Coming off Thursday's win over the Los Angeles Clippers and playing for the third time in four nights, the Nets wilted in the fourth quarter against the rested Trail Blazers, who made 13-of-18 shots in the final period. "We pride ourself on the defensive end and we just didn't do a real good job of taking away things they were doing," New Jersey coach Byron Scott said. "They hit some big shots and you have to give them credit." After Richard Jefferson made two free throws with 7:48 remaining to give the Nets a 83-77 lead, they went scoreless for nearly four minutes as Portland took the lead for good. Stoudamire drilled consecutive jumpers, Wallace hit from the outside and Zach Randolph made a driving layup, giving the Trail Blazers an 85-83 lead with 5:28 to play. "We couldn't get any stops in the fourth quarter," Kidd said. "They took command once they tied it and momentum went their way. That's just the way this team goes." Stoudamire went 12-of-17 from the field and backcourt made McInnis added 18 points, including four jumpers in the final 3:37 to help the Trail Blazers maintain the lead. "We beat a good team and showed that we can come back from a deficit," said McInnis, who made 9-of-16 shots from the field.
