Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Pau Gasol spoiled LeBron James' best game as a pro. Gasol scored a career-high 37 points, including the go-ahead basket in double overtime, and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Memphis Grizzlies rallied from a 24-point deficit for a 122-115 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shane Battier added 22 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Mike Miller had 20 points, a career-best 13 assists and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Battier sent the game to overtime by hitting a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation and Miller made a tying shot from the arc with two seconds left in the first extra period. "They made two big shots, Mike and Shane, to send it into overtime and then to double overtime, which we could not control," James said. "We played good defense, they just made great shots." "Shane Battier was just spectacular," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "He made big, big plays. Shane had a great game." James, the No. 1 pick in the 2003 draft, posted season highs with 33 points and 16 rebounds and added seven assists for Cleveland, which has lost six straight. His 3-pointer gave the Cavaliers a 114-113 lead with 3:13 left in double overtime, but Gasol answered with a hook shot with 2:51 remaining to put Memphis ahead for good. "I would have rather been blown out by 50 than lose like this," James said. The Cavaliers led by 24 points in the second quarter and 80-62 late in the third before the Grizzlies embarked on a 20-0 run, grabbing an 82-80 lead on a 3-pointer by Battier with 7:45 left in the fourth quarter. Memphis made its big comeback after switching to zone defensive looks. "You need ball movement and player movement," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "You have your runner (running the baseline), you look inside, and we looked a lot inside to 'Z' (Zydrunas Ilgauskas), and that worked until he got into foul trouble and we had to take him out." Ilgauskas had 17 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. After Battier tied it at 99-99 with his 3-pointer late in regulation, Miller intercepted a pass from James to Ilgauskas with time running out and raced downcourt. He appeared to get fouled by J.R. Bremer as he attempted a finger roll, but officials ruled he did not get off the shot before the buzzer. "I asked the officials, 'Why are you not going to the video?'" Brown said. "Now it comes down to the light. Their answer - the light was on and there was no foul. I just wanted to know why they were not looking at the video. I have a lot of respect for (referee) Bennett Salvatore." Cleveland took a 107-102 lead in overtime on a steal and dunk by James with 2:27 left before Memphis staged another run. Trailing 109-106 after James made a lefthanded layup with 14.2 seconds left, Battier missed a 3-pointer, but Gasol got the rebound and passed it back to him. Battier swung the ball to an open Miller, who drilled the shot. "It felt good," Miller said. "It was deep. I couldn't tell. But it felt good from the get. Thank God it went in. We needed this win." Memphis point guard Jason Williams developed back spasms in the first quarter and did not return.
