Game StoryDALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks found a way to win without Dirk Nowitzki. Michael Finley scored 25 points and rookie Josh Howard had 10 of his season-high 15 in the third quarter as the Mavericks overcame horrendous shooting to rally for a 92-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dallas has played its last two games without Nowitzki, who is sidelined with a sprained ankle. After losing two in a row without their star forward, the Mavericks finally got a win, despite another shaky effort. "(Nowitzki) makes it easy," Dallas forward Antawn Jamison said. "He brings that sense of comfort that we're so used to having. When he's gone, there is a sense of urgency that everybody has to step up. It's good that we're finding ways to win without him because you never know what could happen." Dallas missed 14 of its first 17 shots and finished at just 34 percent (34-of-99) from the floor, including 6-of-24 from 3-point range. Finley was 8-of-23 while Antoine Walker and Steve Nash each was 4-of-18. The Mavericks lost center Shawn Bradley to illness at halftime and played its second straight game without forward Danny Fortson, who is serving an NBA suspension for a flagrant foul against Phoenix forward forward Zarko Cabarkapa. "That was certainly the best win of the year," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We were between a rock and a hard place, especially when Shawn went down. We were lucky because I don't know how you win a game shooting 34 percent." The Mavericks also started the second half poorly, making just two of their first 12 shots, and the Timberwolves had a 64-52 cushion with 4:46 remaining. Dallas closed the period with a 17-4 run, highlighted by seven points from Howard. "I just go out there and try to do what I can do," Howard said. "Whatever is given to me, I'm going to take it." "Josh Howard had a lot to do with winning this game," Nelson added. "We are seeing his maturity as the season goes on. He is making a statement that he is a player." Finley hit a tying jumper with 42 seconds left and Howard made 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds to go, giving the Mavericks their first lead since the opening minutes, 69-68. "We were in control and we let the game go," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "We were playing the right way and we got away from what were doing, and all of a sudden the other team goes on a run. You can't say you are going to take a three-minute rest and see what happens." Minnesota never reclaimed the lead and Dallas had its largest edge at 79-71 on a jumper by Finley with 7:32 remaining. The Timberwolves scored 10 of the next 12 points to tie it, but Jamison put the Mavericks ahead for good on a jumper with 2:47 remaining. Jamison had 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds and Nash finished with 17 points for the Mavericks, who had a season-high 60 boards, including 26 on the offensive end. Kevin Garnett had 28 points and 20 rebounds and Sam Cassell added 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds for Minnesota, which has lost three of four following a three-game winning streak. Garnett missed a chance to tie it with 2:22 left, splitting two free throws. Finley buried a jumper and Dallas made 4-of-6 free throws before Walker sealed the win with five seconds to play, sinking a leaner for a 90-85 edge.
