Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups had a lot more success down the stretch than the Washington Wizards. Hamilton and Billups made several key baskets in the final minutes as the Detroit Pistons held the Wizards to a franchise-worst 23 points in the second half en route to an 80-69 triumph. One night after scoring a career-high 44 points against Cleveland, Hamilton had 25 against his former team on 11-of-16 shooting. Billups added 22 for the Pistons, who posted their fifth straight road win over the Wizards. "It wasn't a win that was very, very impressive, but it was just a good win," Billups said. "If we can win ugly 70 times, I'll take 70 wins." The game was tied, 65-65, when Billups appeared to get away with an offensive foul and Hamilton a travel before Hamilton made a layup with 6:38 left to put Detroit ahead for good. Wizards coach Eddie Jordan picked up a technical foul and Hamilton made the ensuing free throw. "That wasn't a good tech, but I thought I was calling a timeout and I guess the official thought I was ranting and raving," Jordan said. "I was just calling a timeout, but it was his judgment call. I'll call the league about it." Detroit was nursing a 73-69 lead before Billups nailed a 3-pointer with 1:32 left. Washington was blanked thereafter as it was held to its lowest point total of the season. "Chauncey made some big plays, big three," Brown said. "Rip (Hamilton) made some big shots, made the pass to Chauncey (for the three), and as a result, we got a win." Brendan Haywood had a career-high 23 points and a season-best 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost four of five overall. In addition to missing the injured Gilbert Arenas and Jerry Stackhouse, Washington was without forward-center Etan Thomas, who had the flu. "It's very frustrating because we went out there and I think we played very well, but missing Gilbert, Stackhouse, Etan ... that is roughly 50 points per game missing from our lineup," Haywood said. "We are trying to make up, we are trying to play, but we are shorthanded." Haywood had 17 points and eight rebounds in the opening 24 minutes as Washington took a 46-41 lead into the break. Detroit scored the first 11 points of the third quarter, a run halted by Haywood's jumper that pulled Washington within 52-48 with 5:09 left. "We did this last year," Hamilton said. "Teams that we should have blown out, we didn't, and we pretty much came down to the wire. And the last five minutes, we always find a way to win. I think to be a good team you have to find ways to win."
