Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings delivered an early knockout of the New Jersey Nets. Peja Stojakovic scored 17 of his 25 points in the first half as the Kings built a 32-point cushion at intermission and coasted past the Nets, 105-92, for their eighth straight victory. The Kings allowed just 28 points in the opening 24 minutes en route to their 17th straight home win. New Jersey played better in the second half but faced too big of a hole, never getting the deficit under double figures. It marked the second straight game in which Sacramento gave up just 28 points in the first half. The Kings were coming off a 103-74 rout of Houston on Friday. "We jumped on them from the first minute," said Kings center Vlade Divac, who contributed 15 points. "Everybody in this locker room really likes what we see out there. We were playing really good defense, which gave us some more opportunities to score easy points on the break." Rodney Rogers scored 23 points off the bench for New Jersey, which dropped to 2-2 on its five-game West Coast swing. "I can't explain how we came out," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We didn't have the type of energy that you would think that we would have at the beginning of the game. We played with no sense of urgency in the first half. The Kings did let down a bit in the second half as the Nets scored 38 points in the third quarter - to close within 21. "We came out a little lackadaisical (in the second half)," Kings guard Bobby Jackson said. "We needed to make sure we didn't give up too many points and let them make a run." All five starters scored in double figures for the Kings, who shot just under 51 percent from the field (39-of-77). Brad Miller scored 20 points and Mike Bibby and Doug Christie added 14 and 12, respectively. Sacramento coach Rick Adelmam was most impressed with the Kings recording assists on their first 13 baskets. "I think the thing that you see over and over again is the unselfishness," he said. "If someone's open, the other guy makes the pass." Kenyon Martin scored 18 points and Jason Kidd added 13 for the Nets, who registered 16 points in the first quarter and 12 in the second. "One thing you can pull from it was we didn't throw in the towel," Kidd said.
