Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- For the first time in his career, Pau Gasol got to celebrate a win against the Boston Celtics. Gasol led six teammates in double figures with 19 points as the Memphis Grizzlies snapped a five-game losing streak against Boston with a 96-89 victory. Lorenzen Wright added 14 points and 13 rebounds and Shane Battier and Stromile Swift chipped in 12 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who beat the Celtics for the first time since a 99-98 triumph on February 13, 2001. Memphis lost a heartbreaker to Boston, 93-91, in the season opener on October 31. "Certainly, since I've been here, we have never had any luck here in Boston," said Gasol, who entered the league before the 2001-02 campaign. "But this is a different team. I can see our confidence building, whether we are home or on the road." James Posey scored 11 points and Mike Miller contributed 10, 10 assists and eight rebounds as Memphis improved to 2-0 on its three-game road trip. The Grizzlies won with point guard Jason Williams sidelined with back spasms. "We're a team that really thrives on getting everybody involved, everyone scoring," Miller said. "If we can get that balance out of everybody each night, we're difficult to guard. "That's what's exciting about playing on this team. There's so much talent and so much balance, we can beat you any given night." Paul Pierce notched 26 points on 8-of-18 shooting and fouled out with less than four minutes left for the Celtics, who have lost six of their last eight overall. "It's very frustrating. Too many times we get stagnant on offense, a lot of guys depend on me to make a play every time down the court and it puts a lot of pressure on me," Pierce said. "We have to step it up, each and every one of us as individuals, and not depend on me as much. I know I carry a heavy load on this ball club, but it has to be a team effort if we're going to be consistent and win ballgames." The Grizzlies broke open a close game in the fourth quarter. Raef LaFrentz's layup gave Boston its last lead, 72-71, early in the final period, but Memphis answered with a 19-7 run to build a 90-79 advantage with 2:06 left. Battier scored nine points in the quarter. Pierce fouled out with 3:38 left after hitting three straight foul shots. "Unfortunately for them, Paul got in foul trouble, and more importantly, he turned his ankle," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "That was an important thing in our favor. They didn't have their horse down the wire." It also didn't help that the Celtics shot 38 percent (32-of-84) from the field and gave up 19 points on 14 turnovers.
