Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Even with Antonio McDyess, little changed for the New York Knicks, right down to the fourth-quarter collapse. After sitting out more than 20 months, McDyess made his long-awaited Knicks debut but could only watch as the Detroit Pistons rallied for a 79-78 overtime victory. Acquired in June 2002 to fortify New York's front line, McDyess played for the first time following three knee surgeries in a 19-month span. His last NBA game was in March 2002 for the Denver Nuggets. McDyess deemed himself well enough to play after Monday morning's practice and entered the game to a standing ovation with 2:06 remaining in the first quarter and the Knicks leading by 13. "I was real nervous when I first stepped out there," said McDyess, a former All-Star and member of the United States Olympic team. "The second half, I kind of calmed down. After 20 months, what more can I expect?" In 13 sloppy minutes, McDyess scored only two points - both from the free-throw line - and went 0-for-5 from the field. He also looked out of place at times. "I thought it was a typical game for a guy who's been out that long," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "I just wanted to get him running up and down the floor and experience this level." "He looked like a guy who hadn't played in two years," Pistons coach Larry Brown added. "But he's going to be great." The Knicks ended the opening quarter with a 27-16 cushion and hit the locker room with a 47-36 advantage. They still had a 61-53 lead when McDyess left the game for good with 9:13 remaining in the third. Things quickly fell apart for New York, which never trailed until Chauncey Billups made a 3-pointer with 3:35 to play in the third quarter to give Detroit a 67-66 edge. The Knicks faced a 70-68 deficit before Charlie Ward made a jumper in transition with 12.6 seconds left in regulation to help send the game to overtime. New York tied it again, 78-78, with 23 seconds to go in overtime when Allan Houston sank a jumper over Ben Wallace at the free-throw line. But Ward fouled Billups, who made 1-of-2 free throws with 6.7 seconds remaining. With a chance to win it, the Knicks turned to Houston, who lost control of the ball outside the 3-point arc before passing to Michael Doleac on the left wing. But his shot was blocked by Mehmet Okur at the buzzer. Billups scored 24 points for the Pistons, who shot just 38 percent from the field (28-of-73) and committed 23 turnovers. But they held the Knicks to 39 percent (33-of-85), forced 20 turnovers and came up with 15 steals. "I thought our defense really got it going," said Brown, who got 14 rebounds, five steals and two blocks from Ben Wallace. Houston scored 20 points, Kurt Thomas added 16 and Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 18 rebounds for the Knicks, who are no strangers to fourth-quarter collapses. They blew leads in their first two home games of the season. "It was hard (to watch) and I felt tonight that I was a big part of this team," McDyess said. "I was cheering them on. Tonight was special for my first game back. I wanted this win."
