Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Even without Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks had no problem staying unbeaten at home. Michael Finley and Eduardo Najera recorded double-doubles as the Mavericks coasted to a 97-72 rout of the overmatched Washington Wizards. One of the NBA's best offensive players and the Mavericks' leading scorer, Nowitzki missed his second straight game due to an ankle injury. But Finley and Najera gave Nowitzki an enjoyable view from the bench. Finley finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Najera - a bruiser inside - added 11 and 11. Antawn Jamison scored 21 points to lead the Mavericks, who led virtually the entire way in improving to 10-0 at home and avenging a loss at Washington on November 5. "I thought Mike was a trooper all night," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "He didn't shoot particularly well, but I thought his start was good. He got his hands on the ball with rebounds and steals. When his shot went cold, he kept playing. "You had to like Najera tonight. If you look at his lines tonight, it probably looks like he doesn't have much, except maybe double figures in rebounds. But he played his heart out and was a factor in the game." Dallas shot 42 percent (40-of-96) but held a commanding 63-44 rebounding advantage. Rookie Josh Howard and Antoine Walker each grabbed 10 rebounds. "It's scary. That's two games with 60 rebounds," Jamison said. "That's a good sign. In the past, that wasn't one of the strongest points of the team. Now we have something that can definitely take us to another level." "We've improved our rebounding this year," added Mavericks guard Steve Nash, who scored 14 points. "We've got a lot of work to do in a lot of areas, but especially missing our two highest rebounders tonight, we did a good job." In their 100-98 home win over the Mavericks, the Wizards were led by Gilbert Arenas, who recorded his first career triple-double. But Arenas is on the injured list and missed this contest. Dallas had little trouble shutting down the Wizards, holding them to 32 percent (26-of-81) shooting. Washington was just 4-of-25 from 3-point range. "I just thought we didn't make some shots there," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "We had some open shots. We didn't make them, then they come down and execute. They are really good off the ball, cutting. They are good with the ball, isolations. I think Don Nelson has them playing really well without Nowitzki." Larry Hughes scored 12 points and Brendan Haywood had 16 rebounds to lead Washington, which has lost five of six.
