Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- There is some debate about whether LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony is the better player, but there's no doubt about who is on the better team. Anthony scored 26 points and Nene had 21 and 13 rebounds as the red-hot Denver Nuggets pulled away for a 115-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have lost 32 straight road games. James was the top overall pick in the draft while Anthony was chosen third. Both are having solid rookie seasons, but it is Anthony who is growing accustomed to winning. "Carmelo is a very special player," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "He came through when it counted. We need to play as a team to win. As soon as you start getting pats on the back, the kick in the butt is not far behind." Denver won just 17 games and tied Cleveland for the worst record in the NBA last season but has 11 wins through 17 games. The Nuggets have won eight of their last 10, including four in a row for the first time since January 12-19, 2001. Denver swept the season series with Cleveland, which is on its way to another dismal season. "Not only did we sweep the season series, but it's another win," Anthony said. "We just kept our composure. We have to keep doing what we are doing." The Cavaliers have just four victories through 18 games and are winless in 11 road games, despite the play of James, who had 19 points, six rebounds and five assists. "This losing is killing me," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "I'm not suited to this. Denver played well. They've got their act together. They've got some good veterans teaching that young boy, Carmelo, how to play." "It's not frustrating," James said. "I'm with my teammates and I hope they are with me. We will stick together and we will work this out. It is a long season. We will have to hang in there and get some wins." Anthony scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Nuggets took the lead for good. Denver used a 10-0 run to pull away in the final period as Nene chipped in five points. Jon Barry sparked the run with a jumper and Anthony followed with a finger roll. Nene followed with a layup and made 1-of-2 free throws before capping the spurt with a fadeaway jumper for a 92-81 cushion with 8:27 remaining. Cleveland climbed within 109-103 with 2:10 to go, but Anthony responded with a layup and Earl Boykins made consecutive baskets 32 seconds apart to cap the scoring. Andre Miller collected 14 points and nine assists and Barry also scored 14 points for Denver, which improved to 8-1 at the Pepsi Center with it sixth straight home win. Ricky Davis scored 17 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 14 and 13 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who had six players in double figures. Chris Mihm had 12 rebounds and Darius Miles 10 to help Cleveland to an overwhelming 51-37 advantage on the glass, including 24 offensive boards.
