Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells did not appear to have a negative impact on the Memphis Grizzlies. Wells had 12 points and six assists off the bench in his debut with his new team as the Grizzlies defeated the Washington Wizards, 92-77, for their fourth straight victory. Pau Gasol contributed 17 points and 12 rebounds and James Posey added 15 points for Memphis, which is two games over .500 (10-8) at this late a juncture for the first time in franchise history. Wells, a talented swingman considered such a troublemaker in Portland that the Trail Blazers dealt him to the Grizzlies for veteran Wesley Person and a conditional first-round pick, received a warm ovation from the crowd when he entered a few minutes into the contest. "It felt good to have people cheering for you in the stands, having signs and cheering," Wells said. "It still hasn't hit me that I've been traded. It's going to be different. I miss my boys in Portland, (but) this team is like a breath of fresh air." "This morning was the first time he could work out with the team, he worked through for an hour and went through the plays," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "We played him 27 minutes tonight because that's the only way he is going to learn. He got tired toward the end of the game and he didn't know where to go. It's going to be rocky for the next two games until we work out the rotation, but he played well tonight." Despite the confusion, Wells immediately paid dividends, assisting on a pair of alley-oop dunks to help the Grizzlies open an early 12-3 edge. "I think the fans gave him a very good welcome," said Grizzlies center Lorenzen Wright, who scored just two points. "It energized him and it energized the team." Memphis took leads of 23-13 into the second quarter and 50-30 into the break, and Washington got no closer than 76-69 on a 3-pointer by rookie Steve Blake with 5:18 remaining. The Grizzlies set a franchise record by allowing just 30 points in the first half. "The first half was excellent," Brown said. "We only had five turnovers and we had 18 deflections. But the third quarter, we looked like we threw five strangers together and played. We had eight turnovers in the third quarter and five in the fourth." "At halftime we just told each other that we've got to believe we can get back into the game," said Blake, who scored a season-high 12 points. "We did that for the most part and just fell a little short." Larry Hughes scored 15 points but made only 2-of-13 shots for Washington, which connected on just 35 percent (28-of-81) from the field. "When we can't put it in the basket, that's the way it goes," said Wizards coach Eddie Jordan, whose team is missing injured stars Gilbert Arenas and Jerry Stackhouse. "The guys worked as hard as they could. We're just not good enough right now but they have my respect for their desire and their hustle and all the work they did." "The Wizards played well without two of their starters," Brown said. "In the end it was a good win."
