Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Just when the Phoenix Suns appeared to be on their way to a second improbable comeback victory in as many nights, Kenyon Martin answered for the New Jersey Nets. Martin contributed 21 points including the go-ahead basket, 12 rebounds and seven assists as the Nets edged the Suns, 99-88, for their first back-to-back home wins of the season. Richard Jefferson added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Kidd chipped in 17 and nine assists for the Nets, who went 33-8 at Continental Airlines Arena each of the prior two seasons but began this campaign with losses in six of their first eight games here. The Suns rallied from a franchise-record 29-point deficit to beat Boston on Friday and trailed in this one, 81-66, entering the fourth quarter. But Shawn Marion scored seven points during a 14-0 run to open the quarter, and Stephon Marbury's floater gave Phoenix an 86-85 lead with 4:36 left. "We weren't down that bad tonight," Marion said. "This is the NBA, it happens. The game ain't over until the buzzer sounds." But Martin answered with a jump hook 17 seconds later to give the Nets the lead for good, and they pulled away thereafter, scoring 14 of the game's last 16 points. "We played smart when we needed to," Martin said. "It's about time we started playing like we're capable." "Nobody panicked and that showed us the composure of a team that knows what to do in those situations," Kidd said. "We were fortunate but we got stops and we got baskets." Marion collected 25 points and 17 rebounds and Marbury added 23 points for the Suns, whose star power forward, Amare Stoudemire, returned to Phoenix after spraining his left ankle in the second quarter at Boston. "We missed him tonight big, but we're going to miss him now for a little bit, so we've just got to keep playing," Marion said. "You always miss a player like that who plays above the rim and makes a lot of baskets," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "Kenyon went for 21 but Shawn Marion went for 25 and 17 rebounds. We just didn't have our other forward to make up for Jefferson with 18." The Nets were coming off a 93-86 victory over Milwaukee on Friday in which Martin had a 20-20 game and Kidd posted his fourth triple-double of the season. "This was better than last night," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We played with even more energy and I thought we played a more complete game for 48 minutes than we did last night."
