Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Zach Randolph had one of his best games as a professional but it wasn't enough to end the Portland Trail Blazers' road woes. Randolph had 31 points and 11 rebounds, but Steve Francis hit a jumper with 20 seconds left to give the Houston Rockets a 93-91 victory over the Trail Blazers. "It was just there," Francis said. "If they would have double-teamed, I would have given it up. I just rose up and hit it." "At some point we are going to win on the road and I thought it would be tonight," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We haven't really had a chance to win on the road earlier this season, but we definitely had a chance to win this game." Wesley Person scored 19 points while Damon Stoudamire and Rasheed Wallace had 12 points apiece for the Trail Blazers, who fell to 0-7 on the road this season. Ironically, Portland's last regular-season road victory was here on April 8. "We just have to stay together as a team," said Portland center Dale Davis, who scored just three points. "We kind of know what we have to do, but it's very frustrating to lose on the road, or at home. We have to learn how to handle the crowd better. "Just losing on the road, I'm just tired of it," Stoudamire said. "I'm going out tomorrow (at San Antonio) like it's a war. I'm not leaving anything behind." Cuttino Mobley scored 24 points for Houston, which won its seventh straight home game. Yao Ming added 16 points and Francis had 15. "You have to use your skills," Yao said. "I'm tall, so it's hard to block that shot. If I'm close to the basket, the percentage goes way up." Yao's hook shot tied the game, 91-91, with 1:03 remaining. However, he nearly cost the Rockets the game when he missed two free throws with 9.2 seconds to go, giving the Trail Blazers another chance. Stoudamire missed a 3-pointer seconds later and Randolph misfired on a follow shot as time expired. "We could have won this game," Randolph said. "Yao hit some big shots and we missed some big shots at the end." The Blazers bench was adjacent to the fans. Cheeks spent most of the game in a seat placed between the fans and the scorer's table. Houston built a 47-41 halftime advantage and led by as many as 16 in the third quarter. Portland responded with a 14-0 run midway through the fourth period to build a 89-85 lead with three minutes left. "Houston played a high level game for three quarters and somehow we started making our shots," Cheeks said. "We just couldn't get the last stop."
