Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Lamar Odom scored a season-high 29 points, including a running hook with 35 seconds left, as the Miami Heat ended the Memphis Grizzlies' franchise-record six-game winning streak with a 91-88 victory. "It was a frustrating way for it to end," Grizzlies forward James Posey said. "We need to continue to do the things that help us to win games." "I want to be the piece of the puzzle that helps us win," Odom said. "It really helps your confidence when you're able to make plays at key stretches in the game." Odom's shot snapped an 85-85 tie, although the Grizzlies had a handful of chances. Pau Gasol missed a driving layup and a jumper and Stromile Swift misfired on a 3-pointer as the final buzzer sounded. "Every time I would get it in the paint, they would send a couple of guys in on me, so I had to kick it out," Gasol said. "I had no chance to score in deep tonight." "I wanted to make it as tough on him as possible," Odom said. "He's such a threat inside that I told myself he was going to have to go through me or around me if he wanted to score." Posey scored 19 points and Earl Watson added 16 for Memphis, which still is off to its best start ever. The Grizzlies entered the game four games over .500 for the first time in franchise history and have six road wins, four shy of the 1999-2000 club mark. Odom surpassed his previous high of 26 points against Washington on November 14 and also had 14 rebounds. Rookie Dwyane Wade scored 14 and Brian Grant chipped in 11 and 13 rebounds for Miami. "We just had to sustain our toughness and execute down the stretch," Wade said. "To fight off their comeback and win is awesome." With point guard Jason Williams out for the sixth straight game with a back injury, Memphis had trouble preventing dribble penetration by the Miami guards. Wade, Eddie Jones and Rafer Alston combined for 12 assists and created numerous shots for their teammates off dribble drives. Meanwhile, Memphis shot 34 percent (11-of-34) in the first half as Miami built a 52-36 cushion. Bonzi Wells missed all six of his shots in the first half and finished with four points on 1-of-8 shooting. But the Grizzlies began to heat up in the second half. They shot 60 percent (12-of-20) in the third period and cut the deficit to 73-64 at the start of the fourth quarter. "Our energy level dropped drastically from the first half to the second half," Alston said. "We have to keep our energy up and play four quarters." "We wanted to come out with energy in the second half," Grizzlies center Lorenzen Wright said. "Hubie (coach Hubie Brown) always tells us that the main thing is to give yourselves a chance to win at the end of the game, and we had that chance." Memphis used a 19-6 run to tie the score in the final minute. But as was the case all night, Odom was had an answer. "They deserve all the credit, they outrebounded us (44-38), they got fourteen offensive rebounds, which nobody has done against us in a long time," Brown said. "They set a tone and Lamar Odom had a great game, scoring and rebounding."
