Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers had won 27 
consecutive regular-season games at the Staples Center, 26 in a
row at home over the Dallas Mavericks and 10 straight contests
overall.  None of those streaks intimidated Dirk Nowitzki or
Antoine Walker.

Nowitzki collected 27 points and 12 rebounds and Walker added
27, 10 and seven assists as the Mavericks won their first road
game over the Lakers in exactly 13 years, 110-93.

"Walker's been great all year," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said.
"I'm not saying he's the best player on this team - probably
Nowitzki is.  But he is the only guy who has played like an
All-Star all year long.  We just think he is a sensational
basketball player."

The Mavericks, who had dropped 46 of 51 to the Lakers, were
coming off a 100-99 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers here
Wednesday in which they blew a 24-point lead.

"When a team dominates 46 of 51 times, it's very important that
we got a win tonight," Walker said.  "On top of that, we lost
Wednesday night in a game we should have won.  We have to show
the Lakers we can play with them.  Up to this point, they
thought we couldn't play them."

Steve Nash had 23 points and seven assists for the Mavericks,
who had been just 2-7 on the road this season but handed the
Lakers their first regular-season home loss since February 16
against the New York Knicks.

"It feels good," Nash said of the win, which snapped a four-game
road skid. "It's been a long time coming.  We stuck together
tonight."

Dallas rookie Josh Howard chipped in 17 and 11 rebounds filling
in for the injured Michael Finley, who has a sprained toe.

"He's had several games where he's really stood up and we've
always liked him as a player but now he's getting an opportunity
to show what he can do," Nelson said.  "We needed a big effort
because with Mike out, the way Mike was playing we really needed
a guy to get rebounds and guard.  And he made a couple of big
shots for us."

"It was sweet to win when we were playing without Michael,"
Nowitzki said.  "We've been cold shooting and Michael has been
our hottest player.  We were really worried about his being out.
But we have a lot of talent on our team."

Dallas held a 61-59 advantage early in the third quarter before
Walker hit a runner to begin a 10-0 run.  Nowitzki scored the
final eight points of the burst, giving the Mavericks a 71-59
lead on a pair of free throws with 7:46 left.

The Mavericks extended their lead to 100-79 on a 3-pointer by
Walker with 7:41 left,  and the Lakers got no closer than 11
points thereafter.

Dallas employed a "Hack-a-Shaq" defense on Lakers center
Shaquille O'Neal, who had 25 points and 14 rebounds but made
only 11-of-24 free throws, including 3-of-10 down the stretch.

"I was hoping that we can cash in on it because I thought it was
the golden opportunity for us to do so," Lakers coach Phil
Jackson said of the numerous free throws.  "We never could
successfully complete two free throws and get back under 10
points.  And there were plenty of opportunities there to take
advantage of it."

Lakers point guard Gary Payton was ejected with 4:50 left in the
first quarter after picking up two quick technicals from
referee Steve Javie, the first for arguing a call and the second
for throwing the ball underhanded in his direction.  The Lakers
were whistled for four technicals in the first half.

The Mavericks held a 35-19 advantage after Nowitzki opened the
scoring in the second quarter with a jumper, but the Lakers
immediately went on a 23-4 run to take their biggest lead,
42-39, on a dunk by Kobe Bryant with 5:52 left in the half.

But Dallas did not wilt and took a 57-52 edge into the break.

"We were fighting uphill the entire game," said Bryant, who had
15 points but made only 4-of-18 shots.  "At the start of the
game they came out and made a couple shots and the technicals
really got us out of synch, so from then on it really was an
uphill battle."

With 8:44 left in the contest, O'Neal and Walker were whistled
for double technicals for arguing with each other running back
down the court after O'Neal dunked to pull Los Angeles within
97-79.  O'Neal had bumped Walker after landing following the
dunk.

"I ain't taking no pushing from nobody," Walker said.
