Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Milwaukee Bucks coach Terry Porter received a standing ovation from the fans at the Rose Garden. He may want to pass it on to Tim Thomas and Joe Smith. In Porter's return to Portland as coach, Thomas scored 23 points and and Smith added 13 of his 19 in the third quarter to lead the Bucks to a 106-99 victory over the Trail Blazers. More than eight years after he last suited up for the team, fans showed their appreciation for Porter's 10-year career with the Trail Blazers. During the pregame introductions, they gave him a standing ovation that lasted almost a minute. "It was special, it really was," Porter said. "I feel the same way about them. My 10 years here was obviously a blessing for me. The fans, community and state really embraced me, and so I appreciate that. "It's nice to be back. It's even nicer to get a win. We did a good job tonight. We moved the ball well and executed very well. We attacked the rim and did some nice things." After a high-scoring first half in which Portland took a 56-52 lead, Milwaukee took a 84-67 cushion into the fourth quarter thanks to Smith and Thomas, who combined for 22 points in the third period. Thomas spent most of the game matched against Rasheed Wallace and his ability to get open shots for himself and Smith keyed a third quarter that the Bucks started with a 22-7 run. "I focused starting the half with defense," said Thomas, who was playing his second game following a nine-game absence due to an ankle injury. "We noticed they weren't moving on pick-and-rolls, so I started slipping in and popping them. Rasheed kind stuck in the paint and I was getting good lucks." "Joe just looked for opportunities," Porter said. "He popped out a couple times on a pick-and-roll, cut to the basket. Joe's been solid four us all year and I think he just found his niche on the floor to get his opportunities." The Bucks shot 58 percent (46-of-79). Two days after blowing a 19-point lead in Seattle, they were able to withstand a late run by the Trail Blazers. Portland closed to 93-91 with 5:56 left. But Milwaukee held on, sealing the win when Smith sank a 12-footer for the left side for a 105-99 advantage with one minute to play. "We were up 19 at Seattle and the first half of that game was a lot like tonight. then in the second half we got selfish. When we got up in the second half here, we figured we might as well play together. So we made the game easier for ourselves. We were just trying to contain their guys inside, force them to shoot jump shots and we did a great job of that." Zach Randolph had 30 points and 18 rebounds and Damon Stoudamire added 21 and 10 assists for Portland. But Wallace was a non-factor in the second half, scoring just one of his 15 points after halftime.
