Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Antoine Walker's return to Boston had a familiar look to it. Walker missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds as the Dallas Mavericks suffered an emotional 105-103 loss to the surging Celtics. A Celtic for seven years, Walker was traded to Dallas in a five-player deal during the preseason. In the days leading up to his return, he called Celtics general manager Danny Ainge "a snake." The trade appeared to backfire for the Celtics when forward Raef LaFrentz, one of the players acquired for Walker, was lost for the season with a knee injury. Ainge swung another trade Monday, bringing in talented but temperamental guard Ricky Davis from Cleveland in a six-player deal. "I think a lot of people made too much of it," Walker said. "Now I can move on in my career with this team. This organization can move on with what they have and they are in a good situation. They made a good quality trade to get some extra help in here for Paul." Through the upheaval, the Celtics put together their longest winning streak of the season behind Paul Pierce, a good friend of Walker's during their days together. A 20-foot jumper by Pierce over Walker gave Boston a 104-103 lead with 20 seconds to go. "You couldn't ask for a better script, to knock (in) a shot over Antoine Walker," Pierce said. "It was a storybook ending." "It was fun going against him," Walker said. "We had a good conversation out on the floor. I just had a lot of fun playing basketball. It was the first time we ever went against each other, and he's one up on me now." Walker had a pass go through his hands that was recovered by teammate Antawn Jamison, who missed a short jumper. Boston's Walter McCarty was fouled with 9.9 seconds left and made 1-of-2 free throws, giving Dallas another chance. Walker had an open 3-pointer but missed badly, touching off a celebration at the FleetCenter. In his last three seasons with the Celtics, Walker fired more than 1,800 3-pointers, missing over 1,200. "I got a great look but came up short," Walker said. "I was like, 'Oh, hell, no, don't come in this building and hit this,' because I know I wouldn't hear the end of it," Pierce said. After receiving a standing ovation during pregame introductions, Walker had seven points, seven rebounds and eight assists in 36 minutes. He made just 3-of-14 shots, including 0-of-6 from the arc. "I didn't know what to expect. It was nice," Walker said. "It was a great reception from the fans. It was special for me individually as a player. They appreciated the hard work I gave here for seven years. It was a great feeling to be treated like that at the beginning of the game." "I thought Walker was tight and wasn't himself the whole game and it made it really hard on our substitiions," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "I wanted to give him the opportunity to play for the fans here in Boston, but he was just having that kind of nightmarish game and things weren't going that well for him, so it made it a hard homecoming for him." Pierce had 25 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for Boston, which has won six of its last seven games. He got some help from Jiri Welsch and McCarty, who had season highs of 21 and 18 points, respectively. "It was a lot of fun just getting back on the court and running with (Walker) and talking with him," Pierce said. "It was a lot of fun playing with him the last few years, and to go against him as an opponent was a lot of fun, too." Dirk Nowitzki had 30 points and 13 boards, Jamison contributed 21 and nine and Danny Fortson - another former Celtic - added 10 and 16 for Dallas, which led by 12 points midway through the third quarter. Walker fed Nowitzki for a dunk and a 98-94 lead with 2:31 left, but McCarty made a 3-pointer, Walker missed one and Mike James made a layup, giving Boston a 99-98 edge with 1:44 to go. After Jamison made two foul shots, McCarty and Steve Nash traded 3-pointers, giving the Mavericks a 103-102 lead with 36 seconds to play. Boston made 14-of-28 3-pointers while Dallas sank just 7-of-25. In their debuts with the Celtics, Davis scored eight points in 24 minutes off the bench. Forward-center Chris Mihm was scoreless in eight minutes and center Michael Stewart did not play. "I think that Ricky Davis is going to get more comfortable," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "He's going to be a trmendous offensive player for us. Chris Mihm did some nice things. He hustled. It was good to get Ricky 24 minutes, and at least next game, he's going to be a little more comfortable."
