Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins' layup with 7.5 seconds left helped the Detroit Pistons hold on for a 77-73 victory over the Chicago Bulls that snapped a four-game losing streak. Ben Wallace blocked eight shots for Detroit, which led by as many as 16 points in the second half but let Chicago take the lead down the stretch. "We got up 16 and stopped passing the ball," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "By doing that, we got into some situations where quick shots led to easy baskets for them and they got on a roll." With 3:46 left, Jerome Williams hit a layup to put Chicago ahead, 70-69, and cap an 18-9 run. The Pistons then regained control, going ahead to stay on a pair of free throws by Mehmet Okur 28 seconds later. After Richard Hamilton hit another pair of free throws, Wallace made the biggest of his blocks, swatting a shot by Williams in the lane to keep the score at 73-70. That proved particularly important when Williams made a jumper on Chicago's next trip. Chicago's Jamal Crawford scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half but came up empty in the final 4:43 after his short jumper put the Bulls ahead, 68-64. The Bulls tied a franchise record in the first half when they scored just 25 points on 22 percent (9-of-41) shooting. Chicago finished at 31 percent (26-of-83). "Our offense wasn't great, our defense was up and down, but they scored 73 points and shot 31 percent," said Chauncey Billups, who scored 14 points for Detroit. "Some stretches we looked good and some stretches we didn't." Although the Bulls made it interesting, they could not find a hero down the stretch the way they did on Tuesday, when Kendall Gill came off the bench to lead Chicago to a 102-88 win over Orlando. In this game, Gill started for injured forward Corie Blount and struggled, scoring 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting. "I hope there weren't a lot of basketball purists watching this game," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "That's what I said at halftime. But we came out in the third and we're having good second halves, which is exciting." Hamilton led the Pistons with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting and Wallace added 15 rebounds.
