Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Rookie Carmelo Anthony already is showing the toughness of a veteran. Anthony hit a game-winning driving layup with six seconds left to lift the Denver Nuggets to a 99-98 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics. "I was going up to try and dunk it," Anthony said. "Everybody wanted me to try and dunk it. They were saying, 'Don't lay it up.' I didn't get a chance to dunk, but it went in anyway." The 19-year-old Anthony struggled for most of the night, hitting 6-of-18 shots. But he still had the poise to take the game-winning shot and finished with 14 points. "I kept taking it in there," Anthony said. "I was getting pounded tonight. No calls were being called, but we flowed through it." Seattle had a chance to win after Anthony's shot, but Antonio Daniels' jumper was blocked by Marcus Camby as time expired and the SuperSonics lost their second consecutive game. "I think someone jumped in front of him and when he spun back I don't think he saw me," Camby said. "I was in the right place at the right time." Andre Miller led Denver with 20 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Voshon Lenard scored 19 points while Camby added 15 and seven blocks. Ronald Murray and Rashard Lewis scored 19 points apiece and Daniels added 18 for Seattle. The SuperSonics have lost six of their last eight games and two straight by one point. Phoenix edged Seattle, 92-91, in overtime on Tuesday. "I don't know how you turn the tide," SuperSonics guard Brent Barry said. "This year every close game it seems as if we are falling short." Denver has won nine of its past 12 games and is now 6-7 on the road. Camby's dunk with 1:43 put Denver ahead, 97-95. Lewis responded with a three-point play with 10 seconds remaining to give Seattle a 98-97 lead. "It was a great win, period," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We made the right plays down the stretch defensively and offensively."
