Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics had little chance after they were outscored by Tim Duncan in the first quarter. Duncan collected 27 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks as the San Antonio Spurs cruised to a season-high ninth straight victory, 87-73 over the SuperSonics. Seattle's Rashard Lewis opened the game by making 1-of-2 free throws, but San Antonio responded with 11 straight points to take the lead for good. The Sonics missed 10 consecutive shots and two free throws during the stretch and got no closer after one of the worst first-quarter performances in team history. "I think they had some wide-open shots and they just didn't go," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Sometimes we played good 'D,' but the combination led to them getting off to a poor start. It happens to us all at some point." Seattle made just 3-of-21 shots in the opening 12 minutes and managed only nine points, barely eclipsing the team record of eight. "It was a quarter where shots just didn't fall," Sonics guard and former Spur Antonio Daniels said. "That's what it comes down to, we had some good looks and they just didn't go." Duncan scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the first and had two assists compared to one for the Sonics. "I got a couple of shots early and they went down for me and that's how we play, that's our game plan," Duncan said. "We pushed the ball up the floor and looked for easy baskets on the inside." San Antonio had a 25-9 lead after the first quarter and made 11-of-15 shots in the second. The Spurs had a 51-29 halftime cushion after Hedo Turkoglu made a 3-pointer off the glass as time expired. San Antonio had its largest lead at 61-37 four minutes into the third quarter and Seattle could not rally despite shooting 60 percent (12-of-20) in the third quarter. Tony Parker scored 16 points and Manu Ginobili added 12 for San Antonio, which rolled to its fourth consecutive road victory. Ronald Murray had 15 points to lead the Sonics, who have lost seven of their last nine games. "It shows that we have a long way to go," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "No magic is going to help the situation, just time and patience. It was just total domination by (the Spurs)." Lewis - Seattle's leading scorer - managed just seven points on 2-of-8 shooting as the Sonics finished at 34 percent (28-of-82), including 2-of-15 from 3-point range.
